Manchester United and Chelsea drop points in title chase
11th February, 2008
Arsenal can open up a five-point gap at the top of the table on Monday if they beat Blackburn at home. Title-challengers Manchester United and Chelsea both dropped points at home, when both would have been confident of adding three points to their totals.
Manchester City stunned the home side in the Manchester Derby, with goals from Vassel and new signing Benjani giving them a first-half lead of 2-0. Carrick scored in stoppage time but it wasn’t enough to save United’s blushes at City claimed all three points at Old Trafford on the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.
Elsewhere, Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw at home against Liverpool, with both sides turning in average performances. Liverpool may have been the better side, however Chelsea were denied a penalty when Joe Cole went down too theatrically putting doubt in the ref’s mind. Crouch had a number of opportunities and should have worked the keeper more. Chelsea really struggled to work Reina, and Ballack’s late volley was the best opportunity the home side had.
League-leaders Arsenal are huge favourites for the win tonight, at around 1/3 with the likes of Totesport and Bet 365, whilst Blackburn may be fancied by some at up to 10/1. The draw will also be a popular option this evening at an average-priced 7/2, as Blackburn are known to ruffle the young Gunner’s feathers.
