Manager Merry-Go-Round

28th November, 2007

With six managers losing their jobs in the Premier League already this season, and a host of international clubs looking for a new face to lead them, we try to keep track of who’s going where...

Jose Mourinho has come out saying that he would like to talk to the FA about the job as England manager, after Fabio Capello also declared his interest. The FA previously said that ‘nationality was not an issue’, and both experienced managers are expected to be up there as possibilities and popular amongst the English support.

Derby County have today confirmed Paul Jewell as their new manager, after Billy Davies was sacked earlier this week. Davies has confirmed his interest in the Scotland job, but he will face competition for the role.

Graeme Souness has hinted that he may be interested in the Scotland job, saying "I would be interested in taking a national team position," before pointing out that the Scotland position was also vacant. Alex McLeish resigned from the position on Tuesday before being unviled today as the new manager at Birmingham City. Steve Bruce, the new manager of Wigan.

Souness was also linked to the vacant Ireland manager job, but the current favourite is apparently Terry Venables after he declared his interest in the last week.

Elsewhere, Rafa Benitez’s is looking increasingly like a manager set for the chop, and if he doesn’t see Liverpool through to the next round of the Champions League this evening, punters will be backing him as the next to go. Also under pressure recently have been Middlesbrough’s Gareth Southgate and Newcastle’s Sam Allardyce.
