Liverpool struggle to win a game
11th November, 2009
Last night Liverpool took on Birmingham City and yet again failed to secure a win with a final score of 2-2, meaning they have only managed to win on of their last nine games.
Sky Bet can see the pressure building for Rafa Benitez and it seems that the bookies have very little faith that their performance will improve, pricing the Reds at 7/1 to get a victory before the end of November.
A spokesman from Sky Bet said, “Things aren’t getting any easier for Rafa Benitez following the news that both Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera will be out for at least a month after picking up injuries last night. If Torres and Gerrard aren’t back fully fit soon, Liverpool could easily find themselves without a win in November and eliminated from the Champions League.”
It appears that the strain is wearing thin on the players too, with newcomer Glen Johnson admitting, “If someone had told you at the start of the season that we’d win one in nine, you’d have laughed your head off. Nobody expects Liverpool to lose games one after another. But that’s the nature of playing for a huge club. The spotlight is on you all the time.”
It has been reported that Benitez will be forced to resign from his position at Liverpool however Johnson argued that this was not a fair accusation explaining, “Rafa’s done a fantastic job here and will continue to do so. A couple of bad results does not make him a bad manager or us a bad squad. To say that his job is on the line is ridiculous.” However, despite the former Portsmouth player taking the time to defend his manager, bookies appear to feel differently, with Sky Bet slashing his chances of survival, with last season offering odds of 8/11 and now you can get a price as short as 4/1 that he will be the next big name to abandon his club.
Other odds available include, 4/5 that Liverpool do not manage to finish in the top 4 of the Barclays Premier for the first time since 2004/5 and 28/1 that Benitez is able to recover the recent performance allowing Liverpool to lift the Premier League title.
