LA Galaxy name new boss

9th November, 2007

Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has been chosen to succeed Frank Yallop as boss of Los Angeles Galaxy. Yallop recently quit to return to San Jose Earthquakes as coach for a second stint in charge.

Gullit is a former European Footballer of the Year, and his unveiling will attended by David Beckham today, who is hoping for a call up to the England squad on the same day. Gullit has previously managed Newcastle and Feyenoord, and will hope to take the Galaxy to play-offs, after Yallop has failed in the previous two seasons. The team had been playing under an extraordinary spotlight following the mid-season signing of Beckham, easily the MLS’s most high-profile player. Gullit will similarly become the highest-profile manager in the League, having attracted a world record free in signing for AC Milan in 1987. He also played for Sampdoria and Chelsea in his highly successful career before beginning his career in management with Chelsea. He also takes the credit for the term “sexy football”, while commentating for the BBC during the European Championships in 1996.
