Jol Red-Hot Favourite to be the next Manager to go
23rd October, 2007
Monday saw Newcastle United heap more misery on the North London club, beating the Spurs 3-1 at St James’ Park. Under-fire Tottenham boss Martin Jol’s position is now under considerable doubt, after reports surfaced today that there is a growing rift between himself and the team’s star striker, Dimitar Berbatov. The odds have been slashed to 2/5 for him to be the next Premiership manager to get the sack, with Steve Bruce of Birmingham the closest rival at 7/2 at Sky Bet.
Goals from Obafemi Martins and Claudio Cacapa within six minutes either side of the break took Newcaslte into a dominating position in the game, before Robbie Keane’s close range finish gave Spurs some hope of salvaging a point. The victory was sealed when substitute James Milner netted a volley from just inside the area to kill the game off at 3-1. Spurs, the team widely tipped to challenge the ‘Big 4’ in pre-season, now find themselves third from bottom in the Premiership table. To add to the misery, the reports of a (denied) rift between Jol and Berbatov have only compounded the shaky ground on which the manager currently stands.
