John Terry Resigns As Captain
1st February, 2010
After the allegations of John Terry’s affair with England team mate Wayne Bridge’s girl friend Vanessa Perroncel over the weekend many people are calling for Fabio Capello to relieve John Terry of his captaincy.
It is expected that Capello will give his verdict before England’s next game at Wembley on March 3rd.
The Football Association is refusing to comment on the Terry affair despite growing pressure surrounding the Chelsea star regarding lurid allegations about his private life. The FA is happy for Capello to have the final say on Terry’s captaincy.
Former England Captain, Alan Shearer, commented, “We do not know all the facts so it would be wrong to suggest anything. What I do know is that John is a fantastic leader and a very good footballer. I do not know him as a person; I have just played against him. Only John AND Fabio Capello will be able to tell if it affects the captaincy.”
Sky Bet has pushed out odds of Terry leading England for their first World Cup match against the USA from 1/2 to 5/2. The bookies have priced Liverpool captain Stephen Gerrard also at 5/2 and Man United’s Wayne Rooney at 4/1.
Sky Bet’s football betting spokesman Tim Reynolds said: “Terry has left Capello in an impossible position, as a player he is a certainty to start but it looks very difficult to justify him as a captain and leader of the squad.”
With Chelsea playing at Hull on Tuesday night, William Hill offer 33/1 that Terry will resign as England skipper before midnight on match day.
