Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been jailed for six months for assault and affray.
The 25-year-old who has played for England, was caught on CCTV in December in Liverpool attatking a man, punching him 20 times, before leaving a teenager with broken teeth.
Barton has admitted the charges, but details have only just been released after reporting restrictions were lifted today. Judge Henry Globe QC who gave Barton the sentence called it a "violent and cowardly act".
The incident came after Barton had been on a night out on Boxing Day with his family and friends in Liverpool City center, and his cousin and brother also admitted charges of assault.
An official statement from his club said: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today. The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."
