Jermaine Beckford looks set to be bought by Newcastle United

5th January, 2010

Beckford was hot topic of this weekend in the football world after he scored the winning goal against Manchester United, knocking them out of the FA Cup.

For a while now it has been discussed that Beckford may move to Newcastle United and after the victory at Old Trafford over the weekend it seems that these rumours are more true than ever and betting odds for Beckford to be sold in the January transfer window have been cut.

The manager of Newcastle explained, “We’re in for a striker and Jermaine is one of a few players we are interested in, but we won’t panic. We have to be patient, there is a long month ahead of us.”

Chris Hughton went on to say, “Jermaine's profile now goes up because the FA Cup game was on TV but everybody knows that was just one game. There is no deal done yet for Jermaine but all I can say is that we're working very hard on bringing in new players and I am very confident we will get the ones we want."

Bookies Sky Bet are offering 4/6 that Beckford will leave Leeds and head to Newcastle United this January and is backed at 11/10 to stay with the whites.

A spokesman from Sky Bet explained, “After Beckford's 20th goal of the season, Leeds manager Simon Grayson will be hoping that the transfer window shuts very soon, to keep the sniffers away from his prize asset.”

He went on to say, “Beckford’s goal at Old Trafford will no doubt have added an extra million to his price tag as Newcastle boss Chris Hughton looks to bolster his strike force after drawing a blank against Derby in their last home game. The money has been for Newcastle since we opened the betting and Beckford remains 11/10 to still be at Leeds after the transfer window shuts.”

Other odds include a price of 16/1 for Beckford to move to Bolton, 20/1 that he goes to Aston Villa, Birmingham and Sunderland and a price of 25/1 that he goes to Wolves.
