Jenson Button enjoys being crowned the World Champion
22nd October, 2009
This Sunday saw Button finish in fifth place at the Brazilian Grand Prix and confirmed his childhood dreams as he was crowned the World Champion. Taking over from Lewis Hamilton has meant that it is the first time in 40 years that Britain has had a back to back win since 1968 and 1969 which saw Hill and Stewart take the crown.
Although the 10th British World Champion is currently enjoying his time that he has always dreamt of, he is being warned from Lewis Hamilton to ‘expect the unexpected’ now he has been crowned World Champion. Lewis admitted that, “On Sunday I heard Jenson keep saying ‘I’m champion, I’m World Champion’ and I kind of knew what he meant. It is all too much to take in at once”.
Hamilton has passed on his advice to Button, highlighting the different directions this success will lead him in and explained that it is important to ‘reset your balance, find calmness and refocus on new challenges’. Hamilton also insisted that, “Jenson should let it sink in slowly and enjoy it. It brings something special to your life, it is a strange and unreal feeling”
There is no denying that there is not a lot more that Button could have done this season, winning six races he has remained in control from the start and has done wonders for the Brawn GP team. It will be exciting to watch the final race in Abu Dhabi where he will hopefully go into the race a lot more relaxed and will really go for it.
The 29 year old has been backed heavily from the start of the season to win BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Award which has caused bookies to slash his odds. Ladbrokes have shortened their odds from 1/2 to 4/9 for the current World Champion to win the award. A spokesperson from Ladbrokes explained, “British sports fans have a new hero. Punters have wasted no time in backing Button for the award.” In addition he revealed how they had underestimated his success for the Grand Prix and it cost them considerable money.
