Jenson Button Signs For Mclaren

18th November, 2009

McLaren have announced that reigning Formula 1 champion, Jenson Button, has left Brawn GP and will be joining them on a long term deal.

Button will line-up with compatriot and 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton for the new season which begins in March. Button will replace another former world champion in Kimi Raikkonen who shall not race in the sport next year.

The 29 year old from Somerset admitted that leaving the team that helped him capture the world title was very difficult.

Button said in a statement, "It's always a difficult decision to leave a team when you've been there for so long. But life is all about challenges - and, most important of all, it's about challenging yourself,"

There was lots of speculation regarding Button’s future at Brawn, who currently holds the constructors championship. While the takeover of Brawn by Mercedes-Benz was being undertaken, Button was stalling on signing a new contract.

The mouth watering pairing of Button and Hamilton will create a lot of excitement. However, when the pair clash it will be very challenging for Button, as Hamilton is regarded as the quickest driver in the sport.

Jenson Button paid tribute to his new team mate by also saying in his statement. “Lewis has achieved an incredible level of success in a very short period of time, and he's a wonderfully gifted driver who has earned the respect of every Formula 1 driver. I'm sure there's plenty that we can learn from each other, and I'm really looking forward to using our combined knowledge to push the team forward. Also, I think it's fantastic that we'll be forming an all-British line-up.”

To win the 2010 Formula 1 championship Jenson Button is 8/1 with Boyle sports. Lewis Hamilton is 11/4 with Betfred. Fernando Alonso is 7/2 with Ladbrokes.
