Ireland vs. France Preview

13th November, 2009

The Republic of Ireland will stage the first leg of their World Cup play-off against France at Croke Park on Saturday.

The Irish have not qualified for a major tournament since the 2002 world cup and will head into the match as underdogs against one of Europe’s premier international teams. However, Giovanni Trapattoni's side can head into the match with confidence knowing that they were only seconds away from beating reigning world champions Italy last month.

Assistant Manager Liam Brady told BBC Sport. "I think it's very possible, to go to Paris with a win under our belts," said the former Arsenal legend. "If we can nearly beat a team like Italy, we can do the same to France."

Trapattoni will not have many selection problems and will pretty much stick with the same team which has featured throughout the qualifying campaign. Captain Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle will lead the attack, while the midfield is likely to consist of Fulham’s Damien Duff and Aidan McGeady out wide, Glenn Whelan and Keith Andrews will be in the centre. The defence should have Manchester United’s John O'Shea at right back; Sean St Ledger and Richard Dunne are in the middle while Kevin Kilbane is on the left. Shay Given shall be in the goal.

France’s Under-fire coach Raymond Domenech has caused anger in the Ireland camp by simply naming them as England’s B team. With regards to team selection he is keeping everything discreet but has an immense amount of talent to choose from.

The Republic of Ireland is 11/5 with Ladbrokes while France is 6/4 with Skybet. The draw is 11/5 with Stan James.
