Ireland in the running to win the Six Nations
17th March, 2009
The Irish rugby team will be counting itself lucky this week. Despite winning its match with Scotland 22-15, Ireland was certainly pushed to its limits.
Scotland took an early lead in the first half of the match by continually piling on the pressure. At half time, Scotland was leading 12-9.
However, due to a momentary lapse in concentration, Ireland was allowed to score a try at the beginning of the second half.
Despite winning at the weekend, the Irish team knows that it will need to play even better this weekend if it is to beat Wales and take the trophy for the first time in 61 years.
Ireland have had many opportunities to win Grand Slams in the past but have not managed to finish, lending to many believing them to be ‘chokers’. In the past, Ireland has failed to capitalize on winning opportunities which is why some refer to the team as big stage “chokers”
However, this year is certainly looking good for the Irish team so far having won all matches to date at home and away in spite of bad performances. Ireland are 1/1 to become Grand Slam Champions, and 1/8 favourite to win the Six Nations title.
It is somewhat fitting that the final Game for Ireland is against last year’s Grand Slam winners and will be their biggest test of the competition.
Wales, however, still has a chance of winning the title and coming away with the Triple Crown, although this would mean that Wales would have to beat Ireland by 13 points.
