Hotel owner is confident it will snow this Christmas in Scotland

3rd December, 2009

Every year we ask ourselves the same question and this year is no exception. As it quickly approaches Christmas and the temperature drops, everyone wonders when and where the first flakes will fall.

More concerned than most this year is Jenny Cox, who owns a hotel in Dinnet, Aberdeenshire. The owner has revealed that if we do not have a white Christmas then she will be forced to pay out over a thousand pounds.

Jenny and her husband Andrew, for the fourth year running, have offered their 28 guests a £50 refund if it fails to snow on Christmas day whilst they are there. With some hefty payouts in the past, the pair are certain that this year they will be the ones left laughing with temperatures already dropping below zero.

Jenny explained where this unique betting came from saying, “It all started when Andrew placed the bet with a customer and lost. Since then, we decided to continue the wager with all our customers, but so far luck has not been on our side. It's all the hotel guests are talking about on Christmas morning – whether they are going to get paid or not. Some of our customers even end up ordering bottles of champagne when they know they are getting paid out!”

It seems that there white Christmas betting has enhanced their reputation and having owned the hotel for 12 years the last four Christmas’s have been full booked with a lot of the same guests returning to spend Christmas at the Deeside hotel.

With record low temperatures expected in Scotland it looks as though this could be the year to place a bet! Online bookies Paddy Power are offering odds of 25/1 that Scotland with have the lowest temperature recorded on Christmas day this year.

A spokesman from William Hill revealed that a punter in Perth wagered £1,000 that is would snow in Aberdeen this Christmas, forcing the bookies to shorten the odds on snow. William Hill is now offering odds of 4/1 (from 6/1) with some bookies such as Bet365 offering a price as low as 3/1.
