Hayes vs. Valuev betting odds
4th November, 2009
Saturday 7th November sees David Haye head over to Germany to fight Russian giant Nikolai Valuev for the WBA Heavyweight world title. Haye aspires to become the next Briton after Lennox Lewis to hold a heavyweight title, with hopes that he will have America behind him so he can bring the title back home to the West.
It emerged yesterday that German TV producers want to bring the fight forward an hour to 9.30pm, but Haye has said that he will not fight if these plans go ahead because he does not want to battle his way against the X-Factor which is aired at the same time on a ITV.
To stop the clash with the popular reality TV show, Haye has said that he will refuse to leave his dressing room and will not fight until 10.30pm. Haye’s manager explained, “We have a contract and one of the things in the contract says that David’s ring walk starts anytime between 10pm and 10.30pm British time. So we expect him to walk out just after 10pm. We have a contract. We have honoured that contract and we expect them to do the same.”
Both Haye and his manager seem adamant that the show will go on even if the champion refuses to come out 10 minutes earlier. Haye and his trainer believe that all of this commotion is designed to disrupt him from his pre fight training as he was also checked into a hotel that didn’t meet his standards, organised by Valuev’s agent, alongside other little tricks that Haye claims to have seen in his boxing history. Due to this Haye has been accused of teasing him back and replied to accusations saying, “People say why do I tease him and he’s a nice guy, but this is business. I want to become world heavyweight champion and he is in my way.”
Valuev, known as “The Beast from the East” weighs in over 22 stone and stands just over 7ft 2in. In comparison to Haye he is a giant and has never been knocked down! Despite this, Haye seems convinced that he has this match under his belt and he told of his ideas, “I have dreamed of the moment Valuev falls to the canvas and I truly believe it will be one of the most jaw-dropping knockouts of all time. This is my chance to make history.”
The best odds available for Haye to take down the giant are 8/15, with Valuev to take the title priced at 11/8 with Bet 365. Other bookies such as William Hill are confused after revealing that 80 per cent of bets taken have been backing David Haye. It seems that whilst there is excessive support for Haye to steal the title, there is still doubt that he will be able to overcome the height, weight and reach of the giant. Bookmakers Coral explained that they have had very little interest in Haye, but due to a surge in betting for Valuev, they have been forced to slash his odds from 2/1 to 6/4 to win the fight.
