Gerrard And Robinson To Start Against Israel

7th September, 2007

Ahead of England's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel, England boss Steve McClaren has taken the seemingly bold step of confirming that he will start Steven Gerrard, despite his broken toe, and Paul Robinson, who made a series of gaffes in the friendly against Germany.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has been protective of Gerrard, leaving him out of important Premiership fixtures to aid his recovery. McClaren defended his decision, saying: "He has trained twice without an injection and if he plays tomorrow like he played this morning in training then everyone will be delighted."

Another injury worry is Owen Hargreaves, who sat out training on Friday is set to undergo a late fitness test on Saturday before it is decided if he can play. "He is another one who wants to play every game. He wants to play tomorrow and we will give him every opportunity to do that but we will leave it upto the players and medics to make that decision" McClaren added.
