Up for the Cup

Football

The FA Cup 4th round takes place this weekend when Newcastle travel to Arsenal. The euphoria that greeted Kevin Keegan's return to The Toon last week and Newcastle's comfortable victory over Stoke in the 3rd round replay was quickly followed by a dose of reality when the Magpies could manage just a goaless draw with Bolton in the Premiership three days later. Keegan will have his players well "up for the Cup" but The Gunners should simply have too much quality for Newcastle, even if Wenger fields a less than full strength starting eleven.

Coventry have lost all three of their Championship matches since beating Blackburn 4-1 away in the 3rd round but the Sky Blues can forget their league woes when they entertain struggling Millwall on Saturday. Middlesbro have been quietly improving recently and they should prove much too powerful for Mansfield who are one off the bottom of League 2.

Portsmouth ended a spell of poor home form with a 3-1 win over bottom club Derby in the Premiership on Saturday but they will not find Plymouth an easy touch at Fratton Park and the Pilgrims are capable of earning a replay.

Wigan were unlucky to lose out to Everton on Sunday and they can earn a trip back to Stamford Bridge by holding Chelsea, who will not enjoy playing on the mud heap at the JJB Stadium. On Sunday Championship side Cardiff, who are unbeaten in their last seven matches, should prove too strong for League 2 outfit Hereford.

Man United v Tottenham is arguably the tie of the round and with Spurs thriving under Juande Ramos this could need a second game to resolve.

Man City have been slightly out of sorts lately but they will be tough opponents for Sheffield United and this is another match that could need another encounter to decide who goes through to the next round.

Aston Villa take on Blackburn is the sole Premier League game on Saturday. Martin O'Neill's team did us a favour when securing a draw with Liverpool on Monday night and they should be backed to collect all 3 points this time even though Rovers have improved greatly since they were thrashed 4-0 by the Villans in the reverse fixture.

Martin Lausen is Villa's second top goal scorer this season and has hit the target in the last two home League games. In his present form the Dane is worth backing to strike another goal.

Louis Louis

Greyhounds

Venturemore, our hope for the Tony Williams Coronation Cup at Romford last Friday, lost all chance when getting involved in crowding at the first bend. We can recover losses by supporting Spiridon Louis in the Pepsi Cola Max Marathon at Walthamstow on Saturday night.

Recently voted Greyhound Of The Year for 2007, Lorraine Sams' dog looked as good as ever last time and he should have too much power for his rivals, even though starting from Trap 3 is far from ideal. The gutsy Centaur Fuji in Trap 1 is the chief danger and could be worth covering in forecasts with Louis.

A second helping of Swede

Golf

Henrik Stenson rewarded our each-way investment when joint second in last week's Abu Dhabi Championship and the profit should be reinvested on the Dubai based Swede in the second of the three "Desert Swing" events, the Commercialbank Quatar Masters this week.

Robert Karlsson and Richard Green have excellent records in this tournament and, at 25-1 and 33-1 respectively, are well worth including in the staking plan.

Tiger Woods returns to action in the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in Californian this week and few will want to oppose him even at 5-4. Woods has won the tournament five times from ten tries and, therefore, our tips should be backed in the betting without Tiger Woods market.

Charles Howell III has a fine record at the San Diego course and is worth an each-way interest as is Justin Leonard who is in very good order at present having finished eighth in the Mercedes-Benz and runner-up in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic on his last two outings.
