France v Germany Odds and Betting Preview

19th June, 2008

Tonight is the first quarter-final of Euro 2008 between Portugal and Germany. We take a look at the match from a betting perspective.

Portugal come into the game more positively, having rested eight players in their final group game against Switzerland. However they did lose this match 2-0, whereas Germany won their final group match against Austria. Germany had to win this game after losing their second in the group stages, and were therefore playing a full-strength squad. They only managed a 1-0 win against a relatively uncompetitive Austrian side, and some have critisied the squad for some lacklustre performances. They also have some injury worries to think about, with Torsten Frings having fractured his ribs, and Lukas Podolski sustaining a calf problem.

As a result, the pre-tournament favourites go into the game as underdogs at 9/4 with Bet 365, whilst Portugal are best odds of 6/4 with Betfred to win it in 90 minutes. The draw is generally available at 2/1.

Some have suggested that Germany have looked poor at the back, and the likes of Ronaldo should find themselves in behind the defence on numerous occasions. But we are all well aware of how capable Germany are, being able to perform consistently when it matters. It is a tricky match to call, making the draw seem attractive. 1-1 at 11/1 and 2-2 at 19/1 are possibilities. Backing either side to win on penalties at 9/1 could also be considered.
