Federer Cruises to Masters Title

19th November, 2007

Tennis world number one Roger Federer secured his fourth Masters Cup with a straight sets victory over David Ferrer in Shanghai. It took just an hour and 38 minutes to demolish the previously-impressive Spaniard 6-2 6-3 6-2.

The win takes Federer’s tally for the year to eight titles, and the 53rd of his career. He is now just one Masters Cup victory behind Nastase and Ivan Lendl. Despite losing his opening game against Fernando Gonzalez, solid victories against Nikolay Davydenko, Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal saw him full of confidence in the final.

Early on in the game, Ferrer had a chance of a break point against the Federer serve at 2-2 in the first set, but after saving the break, the Swiss champion then went and won 18 of the next 19 points to take a firm lead. From then on, Ferrer never really threatened to make a comeback, mustering just ten winners and letting 38 unforced errors rule him out. Federer’s record against Ferrer now stands at 8-0.

After pocketing $1.2million and a new car, Federer said: "I'm so happy, this is the year-end tournament that only the best can make it to. For me to win is a fantastic experience. I'm looking forward to some vacation and then come back hopefully stronger next year."

Sky Bet have priced Federer at 9/1 to win all four Grand Slam events in the 2008 season, whilst Stan James have supreme confidence that Federer will repeat his feat next year, winning the Masters Cup 2008, at 8/15.
