FA Close in on Capello

14th December, 2007

The charismatic Fabio Capello looks set to become the new England manager once the details of his contract are finalised with the Football Association.

He is set to sign a four-and-a-half year deal worth around £6.5million a year. Reports suggest that Stuart Pearce is the likely Englishman to be among his backroom staff.

The FA confirmed on Thursday that Capello was their choice to take over as Steve McClaren's successor. An FA spokesman said: "The board has approved his appointment as manager subject to further contract negotiations. These will continue. But there are no problems and we're going through the process for a successful conclusion."

The Italain has an impressive CV, having picked up silverware with all four of his previous clubs – AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus. He has nine league championships in his 16 years as a coach. He has also recorded one of the greatest Champions League victories in history with a great 4-0 victory in the final in 1994 with Milan.
