England’s odds to win the World Cup 2010 lengthen after they are defeated by Brazil
16th November, 2009
This weekend saw England head to Qatar to face Brazil and unfortunately it was far from one of their best performances! Whilst fans were bought back down by the reality of England’s chances of winning the World Cup, Fabio Capello is adamant that there were other reasons behind this weekend’s events and is certain that this performance will not be repeated in 2010.
The pressure was on the team this weekend as England was missing a dozen of its best players and Fabio Capello has taken a lot of criticism for this. Critics have been referring to Sven-Goran Eriksson’s days when he highlighted the importance of key players to the team so made sure that they were always rested and ready to play. However, Capello snapped back explaining, “Whilst Eriksson has a point and was very successful following this idea, this weekend we were 12 or 13 men down and I relied on a dozen men who do no regularly represent our country, especially against one of the strongest teams who bought out a squad made up of their very best players.”
The game saw Brazil take the lead after half time and from there on England’s chance of grabbing a victory was crushed. Despite some of the players that were forced to step up to try and meet the mark underperforming for the team, Capello is still hopeful that the team that he will choose for 2010 will not let him, themselves, the team or their country down.
Capello did stress, “It was the first time we played against a team that was so physically strong, fast and technically good. Their style is very different to Spain who are not as strong and don’t defend well. When we played Spain there were at least 4 opportunities to score, against Brazil I only counted two. However, even though we only made space for two goals, which was not with our strongest team, so hopefully even though Brazil will be our biggest challenge next year, we will be playing with a stronger side that have 100% determination to win the title.”
This unfortunate defeat has meant that bookies have lengthened England’s odds to win the World Cup making it a great time to place a bet if you have faith in your country! Online bookies Victor Chandler are offering 3/1 that England will be knocked out of the competition in the semi- finals, whilst it is 4/1 that they last until the group stages and a slightly longer price of 6/1 that England go on to lift the trophy making them the 2010 World Cup winners!
