Ducks Seem to Love Bookies

5th February, 2008

On Monday, February 4th, the students had a very bizarre experience as they saw mallard ducks outside the bookies. Sophomore speech and hearing sciences major Emily Oestreich was so surprised by what was going on, she actually thought she was having hallucinations.

“When I first saw them I thought, ‘Ducks? Really?” said Emily. “It may have been a random sighting, but they were very cute.”

The police even received the reports about ducks sitting outside The Bookies, on the steps in the morning, so the respondent officer concluded that ducks were not in any danger.

“People were not harassing the ducks and they did not seem to be causing a problem, other than the fact that they were there and it was unusual,” stated the police log.

Marcie Logsdon, assistant in the exotic ward of the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital, explained that the great number of ducks in the area is mainly due to the Lewiston levies and water sources.

“It is possible that the ducks came from that area, or from some of the smaller water sources in Pullman, like Reaney Park,” stated Marcie.

Some of the ducks stay behind whilst others migrate to warm land in the winter. This is mainly due to the availability of the ample water and food in the area. Storms sometimes encourage them to look for shelter but food is their main priority and they will go an extra mile to find the supply in winter.

“Ducks are big beggars and maybe they figured a bunch of college students would be interested and feed them,” said Marcie.
