Dubai World Championship latest news and odds ahead of this weekend’s actions
20th November, 2009
The $10,000,000 Dubai World Championship began yesterday and has attracted 58 of the best International golfers. The course was designed by Greg Norman, being described as “The golfing equivalent of Narnia”, and it has had bookies and punters in a bit of a confusing betting frenzy, in particular the surprise success of Ian Poulter has provided a fantastic betting opportunity.
Ian Poulter has had fluctuating success in his career over the recent years, having won the Barclays Singapore Open but then coming a disappointing 45th in the WGC-HSBC. However, not letting his damaged performance get the better of him, he managed to regain his confidence when he came 5th in the UBS Hong Kong Open.
Last year, Ian Poulter quoted, ‘It will be just be me and Tiger’, which sent golf fanatics into hysterics, but now it seems that the joke is on them as he is predicted to continue his success ahead of this weekend’s events. Despite Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson not being in this competition, the Dubai World Championship is still predicted to be one of the biggest and most exciting betting events of the year.
Poulter’s ambitions from back in 2008 do not seem so unachievable now, and if the Englishman manages to pull through and steal a win on the Earth Course, it would make him as high as the 5th best golfer in the world. Although this would not exactly put him on par with Tiger Woods, it would definitely give him a leg to stand on with his dreams of taking over the title one day.
Currently McIlroy is leading the game, but Westwood and Kaymer are catching up with others not far behind them! Online bookies Blue Square are offering some great odds on the competition with McIlory leading at 9/1, followed by Westwood priced at 18/1. Those that carry much longer odds are Fernández-Castaño at 99/1 and Niclas Fasth at 135/1.
