Djokovic wins Australian Open
28th January, 2008
Third-seed Novak Djokovic has claimed his first grand-slam title with a win over the unseeded French sensation Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the Australian Open.
He becomes the first Serb to win a Grand Slam singles title, and also ends a run of 11 straight majors won by World Number one Rodger Federer or Rafael Nadal.
He said: "I'm very, very happy that I won my first Grand Slam here. I want to thank all the Serbian fans who came here to support me - I am so proud to be the first Serbian to win a Grand Slam title."
Both players came into the final on a high after dispatching the favourites Nadal and Federer in the semi finals. However this was Tsonga’s first final of any sort at a senior level, and Djokovic’s experience payed dividends at the end as he came from behind to win the title.
Tsonga started the stronger, winning the first set 6-4, but the next three fell the way of the Serb, 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-2) to finish the game in three hours six minutes.
