England currently has four fantastic goalkeepers that Capello will have to choose from, the list includes, Robert Green, Ben Foster, Paul Robinson, Joe Hart and David James. Deciding on the goalkeeper is inevitably one of the most critical decisions for the tour, so it is essential that he thinks clearly and picks the right men to accompany him to South Africa.

David James would look as though he has a high chance, as he has been picked to play for the majority of the games in the build up to the trip, but the Pompi player is not getting any younger and has been unlucky enough to have to sit out on several games due to an injury on which he had an operation over the summer so has been forced to rest it, meaning it seems unlikely that he is involved in any of Capello’s long term strategies.

Whilst James tries to make a full recovery, it is rumoured that Green is most likely to start in South Africa, leaving James to battle it out with Foster, Hart and Robinson if he wants to be in with a chance of being chosen.

James explained, “I feel good because I played most of the qualifying games, I’ve been trying to play catch-up after an operation in the summer and over this international break I have time to get myself right.” The former Liverpool player went on to say, “The coach has the squad working very, very well but obviously I want to be the no. 1. There is nothing better than representing your country at the World Cup finals. But this is a time to talk about England as a team not about me, David James.”

David James also made no hesitation in acknowledging Capello and his teams efforts, telling of his excitement James said, “We are good enough to win it, we have a realistic chance and are right to be optimistic but at the same time we need some good fortune. People perceive our exit in 2002 as our misfortune not Brazil’s luck. They went on to win the World Cup having been fortunate to get passed us.”

James approaches 40 this year and it has been hinted that his fitness levels will rapidly decrease and there are doubts of whether or not he should continue to play, but defending himself James reveals, “There are three factors involved in whether I carry on playing: the first one of those is fitness, the second one is desire and the third is someone wanting me in their club. Providing I have all three, I enjoy the game so much I want to carry on and be involved in it.”

Despite James concern over whether or not he will be picked for, what he hopes will be the first England win in 44 years, is not shared with the bookies and Sky Bet are backing David James at 10/11 to secure a place, followed by Robert Green at 7/4. Victor Chandler offer the best prices on the remaining names which include Ben Foster priced at 13/2, followed but Paul Robinson at 12/1 and Joe Hart is backed at the most likely to be left behind with odds as long as 14/1 that he is given a seat on the plane!
