David Beckham reveals he has asthma just before the World Cup team is decided
25th November, 2009
Since the former England captain was spotted using his inhaler, there has been a lot of speculation as to whether he has had this from a young age or if he has developed it, but his agent confirmed today that David Beckham has suffered from asthma since a childhood.
Beckham’s agent, Simon Oliveira, emphasized that the condition has not affected the footballer and that it will not affect his performance in the future. He went on to say, “David has suffered with this since he was a young boy but it has obviously had no effect on his performance”. Concerns have risen as we draw nearer to the World Cup and Fabio Capello makes his decision as the venues in South Africa are all 3,000ft above sea level!
Research has shown that heavy exercise can cause the asthma to trigger, but this is not reason for elite sportspeople to stop playing. Beckham is not on his own with condition as over five million people in the UK asthma sufferers. Sportspeople including the likes of Paul Scholes and Paula Radcliffe also suffer from asthma and it has had no affect on their career either.
His agent went on to say, “He has never sought to make it public but if it does inspire any sufferer to think they can achieve great things like many other sportsmen have done then so much the better. Some of the best athletes in the world suffer from asthma and there is no problem with his aerobic fitness."
Beckham has announced that despite losing on Sunday he is proud of LA Galaxy. Despite being injured and having 5 injections in his ankle before heading on the pitch, the pain began to come back after 50 minutes and he spent the rest of the game in agony. Beckham explained, “I knew it would be like that going into the game and of course it got worse and worse during the game but that’s what happens when you’ve got an injury like that.”
The discovery of Beckham’s asthma does not seem to of affected his chance of getting picked for the World Cup team in 2010 with bookies Blue Square keeping his odds at 1/4 to make the team and is priced at 25/1 to be the top goalscorer. England is priced at 15/2 to win the World Cup 2010.
