David Beckham Retires?

15th March, 2010

David Beckham’s dream of being the first ever England player to compete in four World Cups was scuppered yesterday following the news that the international star tore his Achilles tendon whilst playing for his club AC Milan.

Sky bet has released on Beckham, who was hoping to be in England’s world cup squad for South Africa 2010 is now priced at 7/2 to play for the country ever again.

The online bookmaker is also offering odds of 100/30 that the 34 year old announces his retirement from the beautiful game before the end of this year’s world cup tournament.

Beckham, who is currently on his second loan stint with AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy, is backed at 5/6 to play for the American side next season.

Sky Bet’s football betting spokesman Stewart Beesley said: “David Beckham has been the ultimate professional and dedicated everything to making the World Cup finals. He will be crushed not to be there in this cruel way and it remains to be seen how he comes out of this even if the operation is a total success”.

William Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe added: “It is difficult to see Beckham returning to the England squad after an injury of this nature at his age. We are paying out to those who bet that he would not make it into the World Cup finals squad - he was 1/6 to be selected by Capello, and 7/2 not to.”
