Darren Ferguson set to take over Reading FC

17th December, 2009

After it has been revealed that Brendan Rodgers is going to leave Reading FC, bookies are beginning to speculate as to who could fill his boots. Rodgers insisted that the decision was mutual, but after only 6 months it was decided that he should leave the club in fear that he will not be able to turn things around after leading Reading into the bottom four of the Championship.

A statement from the club revealed, “Following a meeting, the chairman, the board of Reading Football Club and Brendan Rodgers have agreed by mutual consent that Brendan Rodgers will leave his position as first team manager with immediate effect.” Following the announcement the football club decided not to comment further.

Online bookies Sky Bet have made former Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson 11/8 favourite to step in at Reading, with former Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez and Steve Cotterill and Gareth Southgate all priced at 10/1.

A spokesman from Sky Bet explained, “This would be a fantastic opportunity for Darren Ferguson to get his managerial career back on track. He proved with Peterborough that he has the credentials to do the job, having successfully guided them to promotion in each of his first two full seasons in charge but the question would have to be asked if Reading chairman Sir John Madejski would want a more experienced man at the helm.”

Whilst bookies are offering odds on a handful of candidates, it looks most likely that Darren Ferguson will fill the vacancy. To see more odds or to place a bet yourself, visit Sky Bet and get your hands on a FREE £10 Bet!
