On Sunday afternoon Chelsea and Liverpool will clash at Stamford Bridge with both teams searching for three points in order to stay in touch with Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.

Both teams will want to prove a point due to the criticism they have received over recent performances.

Carlo Ancelotti blasted his Chelsea players for their midweek Champions league performance against Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus. The Blues won 1-0 but their Italian manager was concerned about their display and this came after last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Wigan in the Premiership.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was also highly critical about his team’s most recent performance. The Kop were outplayed in Florence during their Champions’ league group match in midweek against Fiorentina. Benitez said that the 2-0 defeat to the Italians left him fuming and was one of the worst during his reign as Liverpool manager.

When Captains, John Terry and Steven Gerrard, lead their respective teams onto the field of play. The rivals will be under intense pressure to put things right and both teams, performances will undoubtedly be compared and contrasted to that of reigning champions Manchester United.

Chelsea will be without goalkeeper Petr Cech due to suspension while John Obi Mikel is unavailable and Michael Ballack, Alex and Daniel Sturridge will undergo fitness checks to see if they can participate.

Star striker, Didier Drogba, is certain to start and England midfielder Joe Cole will be looking for a place in the starting line-up after returning from a long-term knee injury which occurred in January.

Liverpool will be hoping Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano will be fit after missing the Fiorentina match in midweek due to an injured hamstring.
