Chelsea v Wigan Preview, Betting and Odds

14th April, 2008

Wigan face a tough task this evening, travelling to a Chelsea side who will be looking to close the gap at the top of the Premier League after Manchester United’s victory over Arsenal last night. Chelsea sit six points behind the leaders with a game in hand, and will face United at Stamford Bridge later this month.

Wigan are five points about the relegation zone and are almost safe, and they know that a result at Chelsea would almost certainly secure their place in the top flight next season.

Chelsea’s main concern going into the game this evening is their goalkeeping problems. It is likely that third-choice Hilario will be in goal after Cech suffered a horrific facial injury requiring 50 stitches, whilst second-choice Cudicini has a longer-term hamstring problem. Cech is keen to play but Chelsea will be wearing of having him fit for the crunch-matches in the near future.

Chelsea unsurprisingly go into the game as favourites, generally around 2/9 with the likes of Paddy Power, whilst the best odds on Wigan are 16/1 with Bet 365. The draw is up to 21/4 with VC Bet. Many expect Chelsea will want to get this game finished early on so that players can be rested, so taking Chelsea/Chelsea half-time/full-time at odds of about 4/9 with Betfred may be the best value out there.
