Chelsea close the gap at the top
18th April, 2008
The race for the Premier League title may not be over yet, as Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Everton last night has put them within two points of league-leaders Manchester United.
Chelsea produced a resilient display in a match in which both keepers had little to do. Despite heavily dominating the first half, Chelsea struggled to convert possession into shots on target, rarely threatening Tim Howard’s goal. The away side’s only shot on target in the first half came from Michael Essien, who neatly converted from inside the box after a lucky bounce fell for him on the 41st minute.
Everton were restricted by the visitor’s dominance in midfield, which was more even in the second half. Fernandes came closed for the home side with a number of shots and free-kicks, none of which caused Cech many problems. Similarly to the game earlier in the week against Wigan, Chelsea failed to kill the game off with a second goal, struggling to find that final killer ball or take long-range shots. It seemed to be a case of ‘the Arsenal’s’, trying to walk the ball into the back of the net rather than taking one of the numerous chances.
Chelsea did prevail eventually to take all three points, and now sit two points behind Premier League champions Manchester United, who have a game in hand. Before the game Chelsea were out at 13/1 to win the title, but the win has shortened them considerably to a low as 6/1 with Bet 365.
