Champions League Round-Up (2nd Oct)

3rd October, 2007

Rangers again caused an upset, winning 3-0 away at Lyon. They made easy work of the French champions, with three new summer signings, Lee McCullock, Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley all on target for Rangers. The result gives them six out of six points, level with Barcelona in Group E, who they face in three weeks time. Goals from Carles Puyol and Lionel Messi comfortably handed the Catalan Giants three points against Stuttgart.

Wayne Rooney's excellent strike and first goal of the season was enough to scoop all three points against AS Roma, who fought hard, and did themselves proud when compared to last season’s display, conceding seven goals against the Premiership champions.

Arsenal completed the perfect evening for the British sides, with Robin van Persie snatching a late goal to give the Gunners a deserved win against Steaua Bucharest. Elsewhere in the group, Sevilla got their first win the Champions League with an impressive 4-2 victory over Slavia Prague.

In Group G, Zlatan Ibrahimovic had few problems seeing off PSV, scoring twice in the first half, once from the penalty spot. CSKA Moscow versus Fenerbahce saw the only draw of the evening thanks to a late long-distance strike from Deivid, earning the Turkish champions a 2-2 draw.
