Cristiano Ronaldo returned to haunt his old club Sporting Lisbon scoring the only goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win. His tough start to the season after being sent off and booked for diving might have turned a new leaf, after receiving a standing ovation upon leaving the field, from both sets of fans.
Arsenal continue to look in impressive form, after comprehensively beating the Spanish side Sevilla. The opener cmae in the 28th minute after Cesc Fabregas’ wild shot was heavily deflected past the flat-footed keeper Andres Palop. Arsenal’s second came just before the house mark, with Robin van Persie netting from close range. Eduardo Da Silva came off the bench to score with virtually the last touch of the game.
Rangers came from 1-0 down to beat Stuttgart 2-1 and get their tricky Group E campaign off to a great start. Charlie Adam equalized just six miuntes after Maris Gomez’s opener on 56 minutes. Not long after Rangers were given a penalty after Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira made a clumbsy challenge on Hutton, which Darcheville coolly blasted past Schafer for the win.
Elsewhere, Barcelona looked impressive in their 3-0 win over Lyon, Roma dominated Dynamo Keiv 2-0, PSV beat CSKA Moscow 1-0, Fenerbache produced a shock 1-0 win over Inter, and Slavia Prague won 2-1 agaisnt Steaua Bucharest. After the first round of matches, Barcelona are favourite to win the Champions League, at 5/1 with Ladbrokes .
