Celtic win Scottish Premier League
23rd May, 2008
Celtic have claimed the Scottish Premier League for a third season in a row, after they beat Dundee United and Rangers lost against Aberdeen.
The results meant that Celtic finished three points clear at the top, after Rangers had dominated for most of the season. Fighting for titles on four fronts eventually caught up with Rangers, who’s League campaign saw several games postponed as they pursued the UEFA Cup and Scottish League Cup. Celtic did not have this problem, going out in both competitions at earlier stages.
Before the games kicked off, Celtic led the league only on a goal difference of +3. So Rangers realistically needed Celtic to drop points, or claim a huge win to have any chance on the day.
Gordon Strachan becomes the third manager of Celtic to claim three successive league title wins, with the single goal enough on the final day to hand him the win. Jen Vennegoor of Hesselink headed the cruicial goal after hearing that Rangers had gone 1-0 down to Aberdeen through a 63rd minute Lee Miller goal, to swing the pendulum heavily in Celtic’s favour. Rangers’ misery was then compounded as Darren Mackie got Aberdeen’s second and Nacho Novo was sent off for a poor tackle on Stuart Duff.
For next season, Skybet are giving the same odds for each team to win the title at 5/6. Boylesports are just in the Celtic corner, chalking them up at 8/11, whilst Rangers are currently at evens according to our odds comparison service.
