Capello wins first game in charge
7th February, 2008
England have made a winning start under new boss Fabio Capello, beating Switzerland 2-1 on Wednesday evening. Despite being 1-0 up after the first half, it was the second half that was the most impressive for the new-look England side.
The first goal came on 40 minutes as some great work out wide from Joe Cole made surprise inclusion Jermain Jenas’ work easy to net his first goal for his country. In the second half Eren Derdiyok got a surprise equaliser that could be put down to individual brilliance rather than poor defending. England hugely dominated the second half, and got their reward when Gerrard provided a perfect ball across the box to give Wright-Phillips a simple tap-in to make it 2-1.
Unlike some of the more recent performances, England made chance after chance, with the Swiss keeper making a string of fine saves. Capello noted: "I think we did some very good things and created many chances - the players did very well."
It marks a good start to England’s long run-up to the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign. Discuss the performance in our bookie forum.
