Capello names first England Squad

31st January, 2008

Fabio Capello has named his first England squad to face Switzerland on February 6th – and it doesn’t include David Beckham.

It was widely expected that Beckham would be included in the squad so that he could win his 100th cap. He had been training with Arsenal in recent weeks to keep match fit, but this doesn’t appear to have been enough to keep his place in the new-look squad.

There is no place for John Terry and Frank Lampard through injury, whilst Robinson, Defoe and Bent have been forced out of the squad.

26-man England Squad to face Switzerland:

  • Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Scott Carson (Aston Villa), Chris Kirkland (Wigan Athletic)
  • Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Curtis Davies (Aston Villa), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United) Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Ledley King (Tottenham Hotspur), Nicky Shorey (Reading), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Micah Richards (Manchester City) Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur)
  • Midifelders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers)
  • Strikers: Emile Heskey (Wigan Athletic), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa) Michael Owen (Newcastle United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Peter Crouch (Liverpool)
