Capello Unveiled as England Coach
17th December, 2007
The Italian Fabio Capello has today been unveiled by the Football Association as England’s new coach, and has promoted to take the team “right to the top”. The 61-year-old has been told he will start in his new post on 7th Janurary.
He has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract, reported to be worth £6.5 a year, which will see him through to the 2010 World Cup. He said that the job was a "dream come true".
He told the media at today’s press conference: "I have wanted this job for a long time and I know there are great expectations that go with it. My first objective is to meet the players and the club coaches in the Premier League. England has a great team that can go right to the top."
It is a well known fact that Copello’s English is not the best, and he needed a translator for the press conference. He said that he is determined to improve his English quickly: "I am convinced that in one month when I meet up with the squad for the first time, I will be able to speak English. I believe it is very important to communicate with players and I will undergo a strict routine to learn the language - I will apply myself every day."
England have seen their odds to win the World Cup 2010 shorten since Capello was introduced, now around the 12/1 mark. VC Bet are already running markets on events that will happen under Capello – eg. ‘who will be Capello’s captain for his first game in charge’ and ‘will Capello win the World Cup or European Championships with England’.
