Billions of pounds are predicted to be gambled as England soar to South Africa

11th September, 2009

It appears that supporters truly believe that this is the year for England, and for once it is realistic to think that we could walk away with the title for the World Cup 2010!

Betting odds with bookies have been slashed after thrashing Croatia on Wednesday and it is thought that this winning streak is not going to come to an end any time soon! England odds have been shortened from 8/1 to 13/2 making them third favourite to win in South Africa. In addition, odds on England to win both of their next qualifying matches have also been shortened from 5/2 to 7/4.

A spokesperson from William Hill explained that, “The betting shops have been packed with punters convinced that England are at last genuine World Cup contenders”. Another from Paddy Power went on to say that, “Online betting for the World Cup has seen more money than ever before and the phones will not stop ringing!”

The betting industry is predicting a record of billions of pounds spent on betting for the World Cup. England has a very strong team and it seems that the realisation that England has the potential to win has sent punters into a betting frenzy! However, whilst punters are celebrating, if England make it to the end it would see bookies having to pay out millions, but it seems that this is not a concern as yet, Graham Sharpe from William Hill jokes, “Mind you, we have had 44 years to save up the money we’ll have to pay out!”

Other betting odds available for the World Cup include, England to win their next two qualifying games and then every match they play in the finals backed at 150/1, Wayne Rooney backed at 15/8 to be the top goal scorer in the finals with Defoe at 4/1.
