Betting odds for the future success of English sport
20th November, 2009
This last week or so has seen a slightly embarrassing and inadequate contribution to English sporting history. Most sporting events have ended with a loss, especially national football and cricket sides and now it seems that the bad luck has struck the rugby union team.
Speaking on behalf of the England rugby squad, Matt Banahan has confessed that England’s players must begin to take responsibility for the mistakes on the pitch as it is influencing the overall success for the team. The winger contributed to last weekend’s 16-9 score against Argentina, but it was scrutinized after, with professionals and the press faulting the entire game at Twickenham, explaining it as a ‘scramble’ and said it lacked ‘professional talent’. Banahan spoke about the importance of getting a win this weekend against New Zealand explaining, “Mistakes will happen and things won’t always go your way in games but it’s about what you do next and how you react in the situation. When I dropped the ball, I was determined when Paul Hodgson took a quick ball, to be there and get my hands on the ball straight away to make up for it.”
Concerns have been raised about their potential in this weekend’s game but Banahan has highlighted the team’s efforts to do what they can and explained that all are trying to make sure they correct their mistakes to get better. With regards to their match against the All Blacks, the Bath wing explained, “We all know we can take it a step higher for this game. It will be a hard game against New Zealand but it’s about putting down a marker and making sure we raise our performance.”
