Beckham In Knee Injury Scare

30th August, 2007

The nation has suffered a scare as it appears David Beckham has injured his knee while playing for LA Galaxy ahead of England's up coming qualifiers against Isreal and Russia.

Beckham was taken off in the Superliga final against Pachuca after injuring his knee in a block tackle.

Beckham said:

"A ligament strain is four to six weeks but we'll have to wait for the results of the scan on Friday. If it is four to six, I won't be flying to england."

"I went into the tackle a little light because of my ankle and tried to compensate for that."

"I'd have been better off not doing it at all. Maybe it's a sign that I need a rest and don't come back until it's right."

LA Galaxy lost the match on penalties, 4-3. Beckham stayed in the treatment room up until he appeared at the touchline in a suit when the game went into extra time.

England host Isreal on the 8th September and then Russia four days later at Wembley.

Earlier Beckham believed that if England reach the Euro 2008 finals, he will be fitter than he has been at previous international tournaments. This may not be the case now.

Beckham told the Daily Expree:

"If we do qualify, I'll be a lot more rested than people playing in the Premier League."

"That is a big advantage of being in the USA, where the fixture calender is different. It's also the advantage of the shorter season from April to October here."

"If we make it to the finals, I'll be a lot fresher going into the games."
