Australian Open, who will win?

19th January, 2009

These days the tennis circuit is full of talented, dedicated players all hoping to lift the Grand Slam trophies. The competition is so fierce and intense, only the strongest players both mentally and physically can prevail. Let's take a look a the odds and see who the bookies would have us put our money on winning:

Men's Australian Open Winner 2009:

  • Federer: 5/2 (ladbrokes)
  • Murray: 3/1 (sportingbet)
  • Nadal: 4/1 (stanjames)
  • Djokovic: 8/1 (sportingbet)
  • Nalbandian: 16/1 (paddypower)
  • Del Potro: 33/1 (skybet)

Women's Austalian Open Winner 2009:

  • Venus Williams: 7/2 (totesport)
  • Serena Williams: 15/4 (centrebet)
  • Janjovic: 11/2 (skybet)
  • Dementieva: 8/1 (paddy power)
  • Safina: 10/1 (paddy power)
  • Ivanovic: 12/1 (paddy power)

What is exciting about this year's Australian Open is that Andy Murray is one of the hot favourites to win it! That said, though his odds maybe higher than those of Nadal, never rule him out. With so many good male players on the tour it could be anyone tournament to win.

No matter what their world ranking, the Williams sisters seem to be able to come from nowhere to win major Grand Slam titles, blowing all opposition out of the water. Whilst the competition amongst the ladies is tough, i would put my money on the Williams sisters any day, in particular, Serena.
