Australian Open 2009, player's odds: Women

26th January, 2009

There have been a few shock results in this year's Australian Open. We have seen top seeds Ivanovic and Jankovic crash out of the tournament, so who is left? and who is now the bookie's favourite to win? Let's take a look at the latest odds:

Women's Austrailian Open Winner:

  • Williams, S: 5/2 (stanjames)

  • Dementieva, E: 4/1 (totesport)

  • Safina, D: 4/1 (stanjames)

  • Zvonareva, V: 6/1 (centrebet)

  • Azarenka, V: 12/1 (totesport)

  • Kuznetsova, S: 25/1 (totesport)

  • Bartoli, M: 25/1 (skybet)

  • Dokic, J: 25/1 (victor chandler)

  • Cibulková, D: 33/1 (totesport)

  • Suarez Navarro, C: 33/1 (totesport)

  • Medina Garrigues, A: 50/1 (totesport)

  • Zheng, Jie: 66/1 (totesport)

Our thoughts:

  • No matter what her world ranking, Serena Williams seems to be able to come from the depths of nowhere to take Championship titles. She really is an incredible athlete and player and her chances of winning have to be extremely high indeed.

  • However, despite the exit of some top seeds, there is still plenty of competition left in the draw. Safina won't go down without a fight, neither will the other Russians such as Kuznetsova, Dementieva etc.

  • It's not just the Russians that Serena will need to keep her eye on- never rule out Bartoli who has already knocked out Jankovic. Unorthodox in style she is already causing upsets in the draw.

  • Her odds to win aren't the highest, but Aussie player Jelena Dokic has the support of the public. Once a promising female player, she has battled her demons and depression to make a come back at the Australian Open. The wild card player has already shown guts and determination in her matches, and we hope that she continues her winning streak.
