Andy Murray Returns In The Valencia Open
2nd November, 2009
British number one Andy Murray returns to the ATP tour tomorrow at the Valencia Open after missing the past six weeks with an injury to his wrist.
The 22 year old faces Spain’s world number 75 Daniel Gimeno-Traver for the first time in his career. Murray has not played since Great Britain was defeated by Poland on September 20th in the Davis Cup.
The wrist injury Murray sustained subsequently made him pull out of tournaments in Japan and China. As a result the Scot’s career high ranking of number two in the world has slipped to number four.
Murray will start the tournament as number one seed but faces stiff opposition from players who are aiming to get as many ranking points as possible in order to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Murray has already qualified for the tournament where the top eight players in the world clash at the 02 Arena.
With only two spots remaining the likes of Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, Spain’s Fernando Verdasco and Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils are all trying to earn enough points to secure qualification.
For these players it is a race against time as they only have the tournament this week and the Paris Masters to play beforehand.
Murray’s first round opponent Gimeno-Traver is competing in his first tournament of the current indoor season. The right hander has played his last six tournaments on clay.
To win the Valencia Open Andy Murray is 13/8 with Coral.
