Allardyce leaves Newcastle
10th January, 2008
Sam Allardyce has left Newcastle United “by mutual agreement” on Wednesday evening. He was in charge for eight months, only 24 games, ending this career at St James Park with the side 11th in the Premeir League. He initially commented: "I'm disappointed but I wish them all the best for the future. It was a shock, I didn't expect it."
Former Magpies favourite and captain Alan Shearer had been widely tipped for a while to take over as the next manager, but this now looks unlikely as chairman Chris Mort revealed: "A new manager has not yet been appointed."
Allardyce came in to replace Glen Roeder in May, and quickly found himself under a new regime when billionaire Mike Ashley completed a takeover, and long-standing chairman Freddy Shepherd stepped down. The ex-Bolton manager went on to sign nine new players that summer, spending around £26m on the likes of Joey Barton and Alan Smith.
He becomes the eighth Premier League managerial casualty this season, and is leaving with a record at Newcastle of eight wins, six draws and crucially, ten defeats.
