Alistair Darling Budget Betting Odds

23rd March, 2010

Tomorrow, the Chancellor of the Exchequer is to deliver the final budget before the country goes to the polls in May.

He will deliver the budget to the House of Commons at 12.30pm, of which many suspect will contain little more than a party political broadcast due to the forthcoming election predicted to take place on 6th May.

The country is only just exiting the longest recession on record with high levels of public borrowing; Alistair Darling is expected to point out lower than expected borrowing levels, in addition the falling unemployment levels and the first tentative signs of recovery proving that Labour has turned the economy around.

Commentators believe that there will be no new spending cuts or raised taxes. This will mean that all eyes will be focused on the post election budget and who will deliver it.

Paddy Power make Alistair Darling a 5/1 chance that he will set the budget after the general election however, William Hill make George Osborne odds on favourite at 4/11 to make the next budget speech with odds of 10/1 that Vince Cable from the Liberal Democrats will be the next Chancellor.

'If we do get the Hung Parliament many pundits are predicting then there is every chance that Vince Cable could be the next Chancellor' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

For those looking for a more fun betting option you can bet on which tie Mr Darling will wear to address the commons. Paddy Power thinks it will be purple/pink with odds of 5/2. Whilst Ladbrokes think it will be the colour of the Labour party, red, with odds of 3/1.
