50p punt nets £1,000,000 win

25th February, 2008

A small-time gambler who bet 50p on horses for 25 years has won a maximum payout of £1,000,000 after a run of eight winners.

The man, believed to be in his 60s, said to a member of staff a few days ago “one of these days, one of these bets will come up and you won't have enough money in the shop to pay out”, a William Hill spokesman said.

The odds were over 2,000,000/1, but the maximum payout limit meant that the win was capped at £1m.

Fittingly, the win started with a horse named Isn’t That Lucky and finished with A Dream Come True. William Hill also said: "When they told him he had £1 million to come but would have to collect it from the Thirsk shop, he went visibly pale before saying that he would have to go and tell his wife."
