13 year-old claims European Gold

25th March, 2008

A thirteen year-old has won gold at the European Championships in Eindhoven, Holland, for diving. On the way to taking the 10m platform title Tom Daley produced perfect dives in rounds four and five to earn four marks of ten from the judges.

Despite a disappointing last dive, he had done enough to hold off competition from the far more experienced field he faced. The youngster will become the second-youngest male British Olympian in history now that he has qualified for Beijing.

Three dives into the six-dive competition, Daley was in sixth but two flawless dives managed to turn it around and claim a gold medal.

Betting has already started on the Beijing Olympics 2008, with China the favourite to win the most gold medals at 4/6, but USA the favourites to win the most medals at 4/6. Russia are 20/1 to win either category with Sporting Bet.
