Barton charged with assault

Newcastle United player Joey Barton has been charged with assault after a training ground incident with a former team-mate.

The midfielder is accused of attacking Ousmane Dabo whilst playing for Manchester City at the clubs training ground on 1st May.

Barton, who has been capped once for England, was arrested by police following the incident but bailed while they made further enquires.

Dabo, 30, was treated in hospital for injuries to his nose, lip and eye.

The incident was the latest in a string of violent outbursts by Barton, who also allegedly put a cigarette out on somebody at a team party.
