Are there any Brits left in the Premiership?
28th Jun 2007The English Premiership is fast being taken over by foreigners it would seem with 2 more clubs being taken over yesterday.
The recent wave started when Roman Abromovich swept in with his massive £60 million purchase of top club, Chelsea back in July 2003. His investment in the club has seen the club rocket to victory with 2 wins of the Premiership and three semifinal appearances in the Champions League.
The firt Premiership club to be taken over was Fulham back in 1997 when Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed bought the club for £45 million.
With more Americans circling clubs like Arsenal, very soon over half the top teams could be controlled by outside investors.
Other clubs owned by foreign investors are:
Aston Villa -American Randy Lerner bought the club in September 2006 for £62.2 million,
Liverpool - Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks bought the club back in January of this year for £220 million.
Manchester United - the contraversial take over of this club was when American Malcolm Glazer took over in March 2005 for the staggering sum of £790 million.
Portsmouth - In July 2006, Russian tycoon Alexandre Gaydamak bought the club for £32 million.
West Ham - Icelandic millionaire Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson took over the club with a £75 million take ovre bid.
