Sports Betting Tips

More great weekend sports betting tips, including some for the major UK motorsport event of the year - the British Grand Prix. There are also plenty of greyhound racing tips this weekend. These tips are for the Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2008.

British Grand Prix Tips

Kubica and Trulli for a Silver lining

The soaring price of a litre of unleaded will be the last thing on the minds of petrol heads when the British Grand Prix roars into action on Sunday.

At the time of writing Lewis Hamilton is a best priced 3-1 with Ladbrokes to be the first British driver to win at Silverstone since David Coultard drove back to Scotland following victories in 1999 and 2000. Hamilton has the skill and the machinery to succeed but, after his brilliant success in Monaco, the McLaren driver made a serious error and threw a race winning position away in Canada and then another mistake cost him dear in France last time.

Even though he's a very cool character for someone of his tender years, Hamilton will be under intense pressure at Silverstone and there could be better punting value to be had in backing Robert Kubica to steer his BMW Sauber to victory at 16-1 and by supporting Jarno Trulli to finish on the podium at 18-1.

Kubica has been very impressive this season and took full advantage of Hamilton's error to win in Canada.

The Toyota team have been steadily improving and Trulli's third in France last time was no fluke as he started the race from fourth place on the grid after showing bags of pace in the qualifying session.

Greyhound Tips

Ring the Bell with Blinden

The semi-finals of the William Hill Classic will be held at Sunderland on Saturday evening and Blinden Bell is well worth a bet in his heat and for the competition overall. The final is on Thursday July 10th.

As a winner of the Golden Sprint, Blinden Bell has the pace and he has been flowing around the bends lately. He only needs to break well to take all the catching. If you sniff around, you should be able to get 25-1 in the outright market and that could look outstanding value shortly after 8pm on Saturday if all goes to plan for the son of Droopys Vieri.

Super dog Kryptonite a good bet

Derby finalist Kryptonite will be all the better for his look at the track last week and he can outclass his rivals in the first Classic semi-final.

There seems sure to be trouble on the inside in the second semi-final so a reverse forecast combining the wide seeds Toosey Blue and Lethal Freddie could prove a shrewd punt.

Fall in love with Romeo

Bubbly Totti, who owes us a few quid from the Greyhound Derby, is quite capable of winning the six bend William Hill Grand Prix for which he is currently available at 5-1. The final is also on Thursday 10th July.

Bubbly Totti lines up for the first semi-final of the event at Sunderland on Saturday night at 8.15 and I expect him to qualify readily. He'll be short enough odds though in a very hot race and I suggest we combine him with Romeo Turbo in a reverse forecast. Romeo Turbo, who looks a natural six-bender, is on offer at 50-1 in the outright Grand Prix betting and a modest each-way wager on this unexposed hound, who has plenty of improvement in him, is called for.

Top Greyhound Tips:

  • 2 points win Kryptonite 7.30 Sunderland Saturday
  • 0.5 points reverse forecast Toosey Blue & Lethal Freddie 7.45 Sunderland Saturday
  • 1 point win Blinden Bell 8.00 Sunderland Saturday
  • 0.5 point reverse forecast Bubbly Totti & Romeo Turbo 8.15 Sunderland

Ante-post greyhound bets:

  • William Hill Classic - 1 point win Blinden Bell
  • William Hill Grand Prix - 2 points win Bubbly Totti. 0.5 points each-way Romeo Turbo.

Sports Betting Tips for the 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th June 2008.

www.OnlineBettingAlerts.com fans must have cleaned up on Sunday when, as predicted, the Spain and Italy tie went to all to a penalty shootout. “Back both teams at 10/1 to win on pens” was the advice “and back the draw at 9/4”. Job done.

This week's free sports betting tips include: Euro 2008 tips and WBC Light Weight Title. See the following page for Open De France tips and Buick Open tips.

Vienna ‘lying and waiting’

This week sees the climax to a pulsating European Championships with the Grand Finale in Vienna. No ‘cool, empty silence’ in the Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadion, when The winners of Germany and Turkey take on either Spain or Russia on Sunday evening in front of a sell-out crowd.

Semi Final 1, looks a foregone conclusion, with the Turks missing the likes of suspended keeper Demirel and Villareal hitman Hihat. It’s a German ‘no brainer’. Keep your powder dry on this one.

Andrei to pull the strings

Semi Final 2, is jam packed with intrigue. Spain demolished Russia 4-1 in the group stages. BUT and it’s a BIG BUT, the men from the East had no suspended Andrei Arshavin in the side then. They are a different proposition with him in the team. And with a predatory Pavluchenko banging them in for fun, Luis Aragones’ men will need to bring their A game to the Austrian capital on Thursday. Back Arshavin to be man of the match with bet365 @ a mammoth 7/1 and Spain at 5/4 (same firm) to have the first player booked. As for the outcome, it’s a tough one, but Russia in 90 minutes at 5/2 is the call.

EURO 2008 Semi-Final Match Bet Tip

Thursday June 26th

  • 1pt back Arshavin for Man of the Match with bet365 @ 7/1
  • 3pts back Spain to have the first player booked @5/4 bet365
  • 1pt back Russia in to win in 90 minutes @ 5/2 Boylesports
  • 1pt back a Germany v Russia final @ 2/1 Generally

WBC Light Weight Title, Las Vegas

Manny Pacquaio,‘Pacman the Destroyer’, bids to make history in Las Vegas on Saturday in becoming the first Filipino/Asian boxer to win 4 world titles at 4 different weight divisions. He takes on 32 year old Chicago born David Diaz in what promises to be a memorable encounter. Diaz, born to Mexican immigrants has a big heart, but Pacquiao grinds down his opponents and is expected to win on points. The 2/1 on offer from Betfred is simply too good to miss.

Not such a good week last week for us at Euro 2008, with many of the tipped teams beaten fairly heavily. This week John Hanley (BBC Radio Cumbria Racing Correspondent and part of the Channel 4 Racing production team) is standing in for Kel Mansfield, who is having a well earned two week break.

Euro 2008 Quarter Finals looming large…..

This week sees the Quarter Finals of what has been a pulsating advert for our beautiful game. The highlight’s being arguably, the Dutch master class against Les Bleus, featuring a fabulous display of fast flowing football, and Turkey coming back from the dead to beat the Czech Republic. Nihat, the Villarreal poacher, bagging a brace to bury Koller and co.

Spain and Italy to pay the penalty……

Sunday’s fourth and final QF features a team on fire (Spain) and a team (Italy) slowly coming to the boil. A stale mate is on the cards, back the draw at 9/4 and expect the tie to go into extra time and pens. Back both teams at 10/1 to win on penalties for the right to ‘probably’ meet the Dutch in the semis.

Croatia the Band of Brothers….

If you think the Dutch squad have a strong bond, the Croats, under Slaven Bilic, probably the most sought after young coach in World Football, have a team spirit not seen since a Band of Brothers DVD box set. In Luka Modric, they have a player who if he ever gave the game up, could run the London Symphony Orchestra with his eyes closed. On Friday, they meet Turkey in a no holds barred winner takes all. Back Croatia to lift the trophy at 8/1 and to lead at Half Time and Full Time against a team who are slow starters at 5/2 with Skybet.

Euro 2008 Match Bet Tips

Friday June 20th

  • Back Croatia HT Croatia FT v Turkey 5/2
  • Back Croatia to win the competition 8/1

Sunday June 22nd

  • Spain and Italy to draw at 9/2 v
  • Both teams to win on penalties at 10/1 general

We're off to a good start...

We got off to a good start at Euro 2008 with the tips for the opening games on Saturday for the Czech Republic to beat Switzerland and for Portugal to beat Turkey 2-0, which was available at 13-2, proving correct.

We got it wrong when suggesting that Croatia would beat Austria 2-0 in the first game on Sunday but as our tip to score a first, last and anytime goal, Luka Modric, who was 18-1 to get the first goal, hit the only goal in the Croatian's 1-0 victory, we are not too upset as we still made a massive profit on the match.

Our suggestion to back Germany to beat Poland at half-time and full-time, which was available at 2-1, proved on the money in the other Sunday game when the Germans led at half-time and full-time as they beat Poland 2-0.

Croats to hold Germans

Tournament favourites Germany will not find Croatia easy opponents in the 5pm kick off on Thursday even though Slaven Bilic's side had a dodgy time in the second half of their victory over Austria on Sunday. Croatia are capable of scoring against any opposition and this could end in a score draw with 2-2 looking reasonable value at 14-1.

Austria put up a surprisingly good show against Croatia and were arguably unlucky not to get at least a draw. The joint hosts could gain some compensation by beating Poland in the 7.45pm kick off on Thursday. Neither side have outstanding attacks and goals are likely to be at a premium so lay over 2.5 goals.

Italy to beat Romania

It’s is very difficult to find a value angle for the 5pm kick off on Friday between Italy and Romania so go for the obvious likely outcome and back the Italians in a straight win bet.

Friday's other match, the 7.45pm encounter between Holland and France, promises to be one of the one of the most exciting games of the tournament. There seem sure to be goals here and laying under 2.5 goals is suggested. France are taken to come out on top in the end by the odd goal so have a modest correct score bet at 2-1, which is priced 10-1, and even more modest bet at 3-2, which is available at 33-1.

Swedes to thwart Spaniards

Sweden can be incredibly stubborn and are and capable of thwarting Spain, who so often fail to fulfil their tremendous potential, in Saturday's 5pm kick off and the draw is suggested as the bet for neutrals.

Holders Greece don't get the credit they deserves but they can beat Russia in the other Saturday match at 7.45pm and 2-0, which is price at 10-1, is the suggested correct score bet.

Czechs on the move

The Czech Republic are in a transitional stage of their development but they are still expected to have too many moves for Turkey in a low scoring game, with 1-0 the suggestion, on Sunday at 5pm. This is also a match to lay over 2.5 goals.

Portugal should have too much class for the Swiss in Sunday's 7.45pm kick and the can quickly establish their superiority so go for the double result of Portugal half-time and full-time. The joint hosts lack firepower so go fo a 2-0 correct for Portugal as well.

This week's free sports betting tips for the 7th and 8th June 2008. This week the focus is on Euro 2008 tips, with some long-term tips for the tournament plus tips on each of the matches. There are also tips for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

Czech mates

Euro 2008 gets underway at 5pm on Saturday with Switzerland v Czech Republic. Opening matches in big tournaments are often dull tactical affairs as teams are desperate not to take any chances and risk getting their campaigns off to a bad start.

Joint hosts Switzerland have had a poor build up to Euro 2008 and with their leading marksman, Alexander Frie, struggling for fitness, the Czechs, who enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 victory over Scotland last week, should come out on top. Libor Sionko who struck twice against the Scots is worth a bet to score again.

The Czech Republic have some promising new players coming through to replace former stars Nedved and Poborsky and with the top class Petr Cech in goal they are fancied to go a long way and are suggested for an each-way bet at 20-1 (bigger in places) in the outright market.

Portugal should prove too strong for Turkey with a 2-0 correct score the bet in Saturday's other Group A match which kicks off at 7.45pm.

With Christiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho and Nani in their side, Portugal are capable of beating anyone on their day and they too should have a good tournament.

The way the draw works Portugal could end up meeting the Czech Republic in the first semi-final on June 25th, so they are worth a win bet at 15-2 in the outright market as, if that happens, we will reach the final with a cracking bet.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a best priced 10-1 to be the Top Goal scorer and the same price to be the Player Of The Tournament. As dead-heat rules could easily apply to the first market, the bet to have is Player Of The Tournament.

Go Dutch

The pick of the four games on Sunday is the Group C clash between Holland and Italy at 7.45pm. If the Dutch payers are in the right frame of mind they have the talent to upset The Italians, who have a habit of getting off to a slow start. Go for a Dutch win with Robin Van Persie to score.

France should carry too many guns for Romania in the 5pm kick-off to the other Group C match on Sunday. Les Bleus' exciting winger Franck Ribery is suggested as a likely scorer. The French have a tremendous depth of talent and they are fancied to reach the final from their half of the draw.

Croatia are sadly without Eduardo but they should overcome a modest Austrian team in the Group B game at 5pm on Sunday to make it a miserable start for the hosts.

Slaven Bilic's side is packed with players who know how to find the net and a 2-0 score is suggested with Luka Modric a likely scorer. Modric, who has just joined Spurs in a mega deal, could be one of the stars of Euro 2008 and is worth a small bet at 66-1 for Player Of The Tournament.

Germany are the favourites for Euro 2008 and they should beat Poland, who have never beaten Germany, in the 7.45pm kick-off on Sunday in the second Group B match. The best angle for this game could be to back Germany half-time / Germany full-time which is a very reasonable 7-5.

Euro 2008 match bets

Saturday

  • Back the Czech Republic to beat Switzerland and back Libor Sionko to score first, last and anytime goal. Back Portugal to beat Turkey 2-0.

Sunday

  • Back Croatia to beat Austria 2-0 and back Luka Modric to score first, last and anytime goal.
  • Back Holland to beat Italy and back Robin Van Persie to score first, last and anytime goal.
  • Back France to beat Romania and back Franck Ribery to score first, last and anytime goal.
  • Back Germany in the double result to beat Poland at half-time and full-time.

Euro 2008 tournament bets

  • Outrights - Czech Republic 1 point each-way. Portugal 1.5 points win. France 1.5 points win
  • Player Of The Tournament Cristiano Ronaldo 1.5 points. Luka Modric 0.5 points

Lewis the man in Canada

Motor racing tips

Following his victory in the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago, its not surprising that Lewis Hamilton heads the betting for this Sunday's Grand Prix du Canada. Hamilton is a 19-10 chance to follow up in Montreal and that price is worth taking before qualifying gets underway. The young British driver's win in Monaco will have restored his self belief and the McClaren team's confidence in him.

Ferrari, on the other hand, could just be feeling a little more pressure as result.

Renault had an unhappy time in Monaco with Fernando Alonso's collision with BMW's Nick Heidfeld ending their chances of earning any points. Alonso's new team mate, Nelson Piquet, is still learning about the Renault.

Despite their problems, there are some very positive noises coming out of the Renault camp at present and their director of engineering. Pat Symonds, has gone on the record as saying he is certain Renault have the ability to ‘out-develop’ their immediate rivals in the latter part of the season. Symonds' confidence suggests it could be worth backing Alonso at 5-1 or better to finish on the podium in Canada this weekend.

Grand Prix du Canada Sunday

  • Back Lewis Hamilton to win.
  • Back Fernando Alonso to finish on the podium.

This weekend's free sports betting tips for the 31st May and 1st June 2008. Tips for the international friendlys, Greyhound racing and a long-term bet on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Will England go west?

Fabio Capello is doing his best ot instil some discipline and pride into the England football team. The players undoubtedly intend to go along with their new boss. The question is, will their subconscious minds be playing the same tune?

The culture in the English camp is going to take time to change. The team will want to produce a strong professional performance in Sunday's friendly against Trinidad & Tobago. However, at the end of a long hard season, with the summer break looming and the knowledge that their bank balances will continue to grow like Topsy whatever the result in the West Indies, will they really be up for it?

Man for man England are far superior to their hosts and they shouldn't lose but don't expect a carnival of football.

Odds of 1-3 about an England victory are hardly generous. The draw at 100-30 makes more appeal, while odds of 6-1 about a 1-0 victory for England look about right. So back England to win 1-0 and have a saver on the draw.

Scotland the brave

Although they too failed, Scotland made a brave attempt to qualify for Euro 2008 from a very strong group. There is no doubting their team-spirit and they could surprise the Czech Republic in Prague on Friday.

The home side's strike force of Milan Baros and Jan Koller are past their best and the Scots, who are very good on the break, can nick this 1-0. James Mcfadden plays his best football for the national side and at 17-2 the Birmingham player is a decent bet to get the goal.

Football bets

  • Friday - Czech Republic v Scotland. Back Scotland to win 1-0. Back James Mcfadden to score.

  • Sunday - Trinidad & Tobago v England. Back England to win 1-0 plus have a saver on the draw.

Greyhound Racing

The climax of this year's Blue Square Greyhound Derby takes place at Wimbledon on Saturday evening. This year's event has been something of a bookies' benefit with more shock results that usual and the final could easily continue the trend.

So many of the runners possess similar levels of blistering early pace that its hard to see how there is not going to be a whole lot of trouble around the first turn.

Tyrur Kieran, Loyal Honcho, Tyrur Laurel and Kryptonite are all vying for favouritism at around 3-1, which confirms how evenly matched the main fancies are.

In this situation I would rather back the outsiders, Lenson Express 33-1 and Blonde Dino 12-1, to small stakes in the anticipation of them being able to take advantage of the principals getting in each others ways.

Blue Square Greyhound Derby Wimbledon Saturday

  • 0.5 points win Trap 2 Lenson Express
  • 0.5 points win Trap 6 Blonde Dino
  • 0.25 points reverse forecast Traps 2 & 6

Lewis to drive-away with trophy

Motor racing

Following his terrific victory in the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday, Lewis Hamilton is now as short as 6-4 for the Formula 1 drivers' championship.

Monaco is such a unique circuit that it shouldn't be assumed that McLaren now have the beating of Ferrari and BMW but it will have done Hamilton's confidence the world of good.

The young Englishman could now go on and win the championship but rather than back him for the F1 title it could be much more profitable to have a bet on him winning the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Trophy for which he is available at 4-1.

In an Olympic year, there is always the chance of a new public hero emerging but something extraordinary will have to happen in China for Hamilton not win the viewers' vote.

Back Lewis Hamilton to win the 2008 BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year Trophy.

VC Bet are offering great specials and market-leading odds on a number of the above markets, so we suggest they are your bookmakers of choice this week. Don't forget the £100 free bet for all new customers!

Not much luck in the FA Cup final last week, hopefully the Play-off finals will repair some of the damage. This week we also have Monaco Grand Prix betting tips. Tips for the 24th and 25th May 2008.

A tale of two Cities

Football Tips

There may not be much silky flowing football at Wembley on Saturday when Bristol City and Hull City fight it out to decide which of them will be playing Premier League football next season but it will be a game of almost unbearable tension.

There is a strong likelihood that the Coca-Cola Championship Play-off Final will go to extra time and that is probably the best angle to approach the game for the neutral who wants a financial interest.

The bookies make the draw at 90 minutes 9-4 and it is 7-2 for the game to be won in extra time and 9-2 on penalties. The latter makes some appeal but is hardly generous.

Another option is the haft time / full time markets where the draw / draw is priced up at a 4-1, which is fair enough.
For the adventurous punter, however, the suggestion is to back both teams to be winning at half time and for the full time result to be a draw. Here are the best odds available for that eventuality at the time of writing.

  • Hull City haft time / draw full time = 16-1
  • Bristol City half time / draw full time = 18-1

Bristol City’s Michael Mcindoe is a best priced 11-2 to score at anytime and 16-1 to get the first goal and the same price to hit the last goal. Those odds are well worth taking as Mcindoe has scored in 3 of Bristol’s last 4 games. He takes penalties and can knock them in from free kicks as well

Leeds Utd are the favourites to get the better of Doncaster in Sunday’s all-Yorkshire Coca-Cola Division One Play-off Final. Rovers have done fantastically well to get to this stage but the visit to Wembley could be just one hurdle too many and Leeds are fancied to win 2-0 which is available at 10-1 in a couple of places.

Jonathan Howson, who was United’s hero in the semi-final with 2 goals, is the man back to score. Howson is 16-1 in both the first and last goal scorer markets and he is a best priced 5-1 to score an anytime goal.

Best Football Bets

Saturday Coca-Cola Championship Play-off Final:

  • Back both Hull City half time / draw full time and Bristol City half time / draw full time.
  • Back Michael Mcindoe to score first, last and anytime goal.

Sunday Coca-Cola Division One Play-off Final:

  • Back Leeds Utd to win 2-0. *Back Jonathan Howson to score first, last and anytime goal.

Fernando’s drive-away

Motor Racing Tips

Formula One’s marquee event, the Monaco Grand Prix, takes place this Sunday and petrol-heads will be in seventh heaven.

For those of us who are more worried about the cost of filling the family car with 4-star and trying to avoid collecting speeding tickets, the best way to get excited about this weekend’s race is to back Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard has won the last two races in the millionaires’ playground and he was fourth in 2005. The reason he is such a big price this time has been the poor form of the Renault team this season but there have been signs in the last couple of races that things are beginning to improve. Alonso picked up 3 points in the latest race in Turkey and, given his mastery of the unique Monaco circuit, odds of 22-1 make plenty of each-way appeal.

Nick Heidfeld has a good record in Monaco and, with the BMW-Sauber picking up points regularly this year, the German is well worth a bet at 5-1 to finish on the podium on Sunday.

Monaco Grand Prix Best Bets

  • Fernando Alonso 1 point each-way in outright market.
  • Nick Heidfeld 1 point to finish on the podium.

Harry's game

Anyone who took our advice to back Portsmouth when they were 16-1 for the FA Cup is sitting pretty with Harry Reknapp's side now a best priced 4-5 to lift the famous old trophy.

Whilst I still expect Portsmouth's superior class to tell and for the Premier League side to eventually come out on top at Wembley, I would not be keen to back them at their current outright odds. Pompey's last five league matches have produced just one draw and they have only scored once in that run.

Cardiff on the other hand have collected two wins and a draw from their last five Championship games and have found the back of the net eleven times.

Dave Jones is an excellent manager and he will ensure the Bluebirds will not be going to Wembley just to enjoy themselves and they will battle all the way. The match could easily go into extra-time like so many Cup finals. The bookies beileve this is very likely and you will struggle to beat 9-4 about a draw at 90 minutes. 9-2 about a draw half time / draw full-time make a fair amount of appeal.

Portsmouth to win in extra time at 9-1 also makes a good deal of appeal, while a correct score bet of 2-2 at 90 minutes, which can be backed at odds of up to 25-1, is worth considering.

Joe Ledley has been on target for Cardiff recently, including form the spot, and the 13-2 about him scoring at anytime is reasonable price.

Football Tips

  • FA Cup Final Saturday - Cardiff v Portsmouth. Back draw half time / draw full-time, 2-2 correct score and Portsmouth to win in extra time. Back Joe Ledley to score anytime goal.

Lovely Bubbly

Our bad luck in the Blue Square Greyhound Derby continued last week when Romeo Maldini was knocked out and Swift N Smart had to be withdrawn. However, there is still a long way to go in the competition and plenty of time for us to turn things around.

Bubbly Totti is a very clever hound and he has a very clever trainer in Ted Soppit. The Scottish Derby runner-up showed excellent track craft to win his heat last Saturday and he will not be fazed by the incredible din on the night if he makes it the final. Bubbly Totti is a best priced 20-1 at time of writing and that is worth taking.

The lightly raced Blue Jockey is open to plenty of improvement. Fraser Black's dog showed a good attitude to win his heat last weekend and he's worth supporting each-way at 50-1.

Greyhound Tips

Blue Square Greyhound Derby back Bubbly Totti to win at 20-1 and back Blue Jockey each-way at 50-1.

This weekend's tips include the final Premier League 2007/2008 season tips, Championship playoff tips and Blue Square Greyhound Derby tips. These sports betting tips are for the 9th, 10th and 11th May 2008.

The biggest prize in sport

Promotion to the Premier League is the biggest prize in sport. The millions a club gets for joining the top echelon of English football dwarfs anything on offer in boxing, tennis, golf, motor racing, cricket and horse racing or any other sport you care to name for that matter. The tension in this weekend's play-off semi-final first legs will be almost unbearable.

Crystal Palace and Bristol City, who meet in a 12.15 kick-off on Saturday, enjoyed resounding victories in the Championship last week and both sides will fancy their chances. Palace won the league match at Selhurst Park and home advantage can see them edge this by the odd goal. Go for the home win and Palace to win by one goal.

Sunday's 12.00 game between Watford and Hull could be even tighter. Watford have found winning very hard recently and have only won once in their last 14 matches. However, they have had 9 draws in that run. Hull have managed 8 wins and 3 draws in the same period. Go for the draw with 0-0 and 1-1 correct score bets and backing draw half time/draw full time, which looks fair value at 4-1.

Ultra squeaky bum time

The final matches in the Premier League this season are on Sunday and, with only Derby's relegation confirmed, this will be when everything else is decided.

Man Utd have such a superior goal difference to Chelsea that a win at Wigan will confirm them as champions. Its is very hard to see Sir Alex's side slipping up at the final hurdle. However, Wigan won away at Villa last weekend and are finishing the season in good form. From a punting perspective, the 14-1 about Steve Bruce's side is just too big to ignore and the 11-2 about a draw is also tempting.

Bolton's defeat of Sunderland last week ensured they will be in the Premier League next season unless they lose heavily to Chelsea on Sunday and Reading beat Derby by a cricket score. The Bolton players' professional pride will stop them rolling over at Stamford Bridge but even at 17-1 to win and 7-1 to draw, the Trotters are easy to resist with Avram Grant's men going all out to keep the pressure on Man Utd.

Only a big win at Pride Park will give Reading a chance of avoiding the drop. The Royals will fight hard but in their present woeful form, which has seen them fail to score in the last six games, a win could prove beyond them, even against Derby, and the draw at odds of 3-1 looks a reasonable bet.

Birmingham's fate is in the hands of Fulham and Reading. The Blues have to get something from their game with Blackburn but even a resounding win may not be enough. The pressure will be horrible and, with Blackburn in good form, odds of 10-11 about a home win make limited appeal. For those wishing a better value interest the suggestion is to back Birmingham to win by one goal which is available at 11-4.

If Fulham beat Portsmouth to stay in the Premier League they will probably make a film about it and call it "The Great Escape". Fact is stranger than fiction and with Fulham having won 3 of their last 4 and, believing they can pull it off, they have to be the bet against a Pompey side that have lost their way since reaching the FA Cup final.

Aston Villa go to West Ham knowing that a win will give them a chance of playing in Europe. Martin O'Neill's troops are sure to be up for this so, with West Ham having little but pride to play for, go for the away win.

Everton know a point at home against Newcastle will give them that coveted UEFA Cup spot. Kevin Keegan's former association with Liverpool will ensure he'll have the Magpies revved up. There should be goals in this game, so lay under 2.5 goals and back Everton, who's incentive could help them come out on top.

Neither Tottenham nor Liverpool will have much incentive in their match. Liverpool in particular will be looking forward to their holidays and the home side are taken to win as they will probably want this just a bit more as Liverpool are a good scalp at any time.

Gareth Southgate and Sven-Goran Eriksson will have their work cut out to motivate their players this weekend and Middlesbro v Man City is taken to end in a low scoring draw. Lay over 2.5 goals.

Sunderland still have the chance of finishing top dog in the north east and, with Roy Keane driving them on, the Black Cats are the value bet at 100-30 to beat Arsenal.

Football Tips

  • Sunday - Wigan v Man Utd back the home win and the draw. Chelsea v Bolton home win. Derby v Reading draw. Birmingham v Blackburn home win and back Birmingham to win by one goal. Portsmouth v Fulham away win. West Ham v Aston Villa away win. Everton v Newcastle home win and lay under 2.5 goals. Tottenham v Liverpool home win. Middlesbro v Man City draw and lay over 2.5 goals. Sunderland v Arsenal home win.

Championship play-off semi-finals

  • Saturday - Crystal Palace v Bristol City home win and back Place to win by one goal. Sunday - Watford v Hull draw, back 0-0 & 1-1 correct scores and back draw half-time/draw full-time.

Get Smart

We had awful luck in the first round of the Blue Square Greyhound Derby last week but at least one of our two ante-post picks, Romeo Maldini, made it through to the next round.

Our other hope Spears Tarquynn was just about to challenge for the lead in his heat when forced to check badly and losing all chance. I suggest we replace Spears Tarquynn in our Greyhound Derby portfolio with the winner of that race, Swift N Smart. Nick Mead's dog will always give himself a chance with his blistering early pace. He is one of the youngest dogs in the competition and can still improve. He'll need to, but you can back him at 150-1, which makes it worth taking the chance. The next round of the Greyhound Derby begins this Friday May 9th.

The other big greyhound event at the moment is the Labrokes 600. The quarter finals are run at Shelbourne Park in Ireland on Saturday night. The rocket propelled Shelbourne Aston looks a worthy favourite on the first quarter final Ante-post favourite College Causeway will be all the rage in the second quarter final but I think it could be worth taking him on with Tyrur Kenny who doesn't know how to run a bad race and is a real battler. The third heat is best left to the evergreen Si Senor who continues in great heart.

Greyhound Tips

Blue Square Greyhound Derby back Swift N Smart each-way at 150-1

Shelbourne Park Saturday night:

  • 8.55 Shelbourne Aston
  • 9.10 Tyrur Kenny
  • 9.25 Si Senor

Keep digging chaps

If Fulham avoid relegation it will be the greatest escape since Steve McQueen, Dickie Attenborough, James Garner and co broke out of Stalag Luft III. Fulham face another side haunted by the drop in Birmingham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Roy Hodgson's men came from two down to beat Man City last Saturday and, with Birmingham surrendering a two goal lead to draw against Liverpool the same day, the momentum is with the home side and they can keep tunnelling away with hope. Brian McBride's return to fitness has been one of the chief reasons for Fulham's late revival and the hard working American is worth backing to score.

Aston Villa entertain Wigan in their final home match of the season and Martin O'Neill's in-form side must be the bet as they try to chase down Everton for fifth place. Wigan will offer stubborn resistance but the Villans' greater firepower should win the day and 3 vital points. Carew and Agbonlahor have both been on target for Villa in the last three games but big defender Martin Laursen, who can be very dangerous from set-pieces, is the best value to score.

Blackburn are finishing the season in decent form and should have little trouble accounting for Derby who suffered another drubbing at the hands of Arsenal on Monday evening.

Bolton have suddenly rediscovered their old ugly, but successful, style of playing. The Trotters can go a long way to securing their Premier status by beating Sunderland on Saturday. There is unlikely to be much free flowing attacking football at the Reebok. Go for a 1-0 win for Bolton and lay over 2.5 goals.

Middlesbro welcome Portsmouth to the Riverside on Saturday. Pompey have taken their eye off the ball somewhat since reaching the FA Cup final and, with Boro needing something from the game to guarantee safety, the home side is the bet.

Reading have failed to score in their last five and, as a result, find themselves hovering above the trap door. Their visitors on Saturday, Spurs, have a good recent scoring record and the Royals could end up in even deeper trouble. Berbatov, who is set to leave White Hart Lane in the summer, will be keen to score for Spurs to increase his value to potential suitors.

West Ham pulled off a shock result when beating Man Utd at this stage last season but the Hammers were fighting for their Premier League lives then. They have no such incentive when they visit Old Trafford for the early match on Sunday afternoon and Sir Alex Feguson's side should come out on top this time as they battle for the title. There should be goals in this game and laying under 2.5 could be profitable.

Liverpool would normally be the bet to beat Man City at Anfield on Sunday but the Reds could be vulnerable after playing Chelsea in midweek in the Champions League semi-final and having already wrapped up fourth place in the Premiership. City have been hard to predict lately but they are a talented side and, at the prices, they should be backed to cause an upset.

Arsenal, who have enjoyed easy wins against woeful Derby and struggling Reading in their last two matches, will get a much sterner test from Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Toffees found some of their early season form in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last weekend and will fight for everything as they as they try to cling on to a UFEA Cup place. Go for the draw.

Newcastle are one of the form sides in the Premier League at present but the Magpies' run of good results has come against relatively weak opposition and they will find Chelsea a totally different cup of tea at St James's Park on Monday night. The title chasing visitors can claim all 3 points.

Fall for Romeo

This year's Blue Square Greyhound Derby gets underway this week with the first-round heats on Friday and Saturday. We have already suggested backing Spears Tarquynn, who goes in heat 12 on Saturday night at Wimbledon, each-way ante-post for the greatest event in greyhound racing. If you haven't already backed Spears Tarquynn you can still get on at odds of a 100-1 or even bigger.

It is also worth adding Romeo Maldini, who goes in heat 5 on Friday night, to our Greyhound Derby portfolio at 20-1. The Firmager hound is tremendously strong and just the type to keep his form throughout this lengthy competition.

Back Romeo Maldini with the well fancied Charlie Lister-trained Ninja Jamie in heat 6 and speedy railer Commander Chief in heat 11 in three win doubles and a treble on Friday night.

On Saturday have the same bet on Spears Tarquynn, Westmead Keawn heat 13 and Tyrur Laurel heat 17.

Chelsea to bridge gap

Football Betting Tips

The 12.45pm kick-off on Saturday between Chelsea and Man Utd dominates this weekend's action. Neither side have been at their best lately and both have gruelling midweek European games to get over. Chelsea lack the flair of Utd but their pragmatic approach and deep squad has kept them in the title race and a victory at the Bridge will see them draw level on points with Utd at the top of the table. Back a 1-0 win for Chelsea and lay over 2.5 goals.

Birmingham, who were thrashed 5-1 by Aston Villa last Sunday, have to earn at least a draw against Liverpool on Saturday if they are to climb out of the bottom three. Liverpool fielded a weakened side against Fulham last week and still won. The Reds will probably rest players again this time and the Blues, who are a much better side than Fulham, are worth backing at 2-1 to come out on top. Once again back Birmingham's Zarate to score

Man City have returned to form lately and they should beat Fulham even though the visitors will give it everything they have in a last desperate bid to avoid the drop. This could be a high scoring affair so be brave and go for 3-0 and 3-1 to the home side and lay under 2.5 goals.

Conspiracy theorists will have a field-day if Middlesboro and Sunderland draw on Saturday as both sides would probably settle for a point each in advance. The truth is neither is playing well enough at present to back to win. Correct scores 0-0 & 1-1 are suggested and lay over 2.5 goals

Tottenham have only pride to play for when Bolton visit White Hart Lane. The Trotters, on the other hand, are playing for their Premier League lives so, with Gary Megson's team buoyed by victories in their last two games, go for the away win.

The natives are restless at Upton Park and Alan Curbishley is likely to face more abuse when rejuvenated Newcastle Utd take on West Ham on Saturday. The Magpies are going great guns and can continue their run as the Hammers concentrate on blooding their youngsters.

Last week we suggested backing Reading at 9-2 for relegation with the intent of laying the bet off to ensure a bet to nothing if, as expected, they were beaten by Arsenal. The Gunners duly won and Reading are now as short as 2-1 for the drop. Reading have failed to find the net in their last four starts and they could find themselves in even deeper trouble against Wigan, who can virtually guarantee their own safety by winning, at the JJB Stadium on Saturday. Heskey has been on target in the last two games and can score again for Wigan.

Portsmouth entertain Blackburn in the early game on Sunday. Pompey's form has dipped recently with their minds on the FA Cup final and Blackburn are the value here after their creditable draw against Man Utd last weekend.

There is plenty hanging on the 4pm kick-off between Everton and Aston Villa. The home team's form has nose-dived since they were knocked out of the UEFA Cup and, with Villa having smashed in 14 goals in their last three games, the bet has to be to support the visitors and back Agbonlahor to score.

Monday night's match between Derby and Arsenal may not be the cake walk many will expect for the away side. Although Derby have suffered a couple of maulings at the hands of Aston Villa and Chelsea, they have also gone down just 1-0 to Man Utd and by the same score to Everton in recent games. A potentially profitable way to get involved could be to back draw half time - Arsenal full time and a 1-0 win for Arsenal.

Premier League Tips

  • Saturday - Birmingham v Liverpool home win, back Zarate to score first, last and anytime goal. Chelsea v Man Utd home win, correct score 1-0. Man City v Fulham home win, correct scores 3-0 & 3-1 and lay under 2.5 goals. Sunderland v Middlesboro draw, correct score 0-0 & 1-1 and lay over 2.5 goals. Tottenham v Bolton away win. West Ham v Newcastle away win. Wigan v Reading home win and back Heskey to score first, last and anytime goal.

  • Sunday - Portsmouth v Blackburn away win. Everton v Aston Villa away win and back Agbonlahor to score first, last and anytime goal.

  • Monday - Derby v Arsenal away win, draw half time - Arsenal full time and 0-1 correct score.

Football Tips

Reading heading for trouble

Reading were dragged back into the relegation fight when they went down 2-0 at home to Fulham last week and the Royals will probably be teetering even closer to the trap door after visiting Arsenal on Saturday. The Gunners have suffered a couple of devastating losses themselves recently but those defeats came in pursuit of silverware and they should simply outclass Reading.

Reading are 9-2 for the drop and those odds could shorten dramatically this weekend. Reading's final match is at home to Derby. They would be expected to collect 3 points there but their other two games are against Wigan and Spurs and they will not find it easy to get anything from either. Take the 9-2 now about Reading being relegated with the intention of laying it off when the price shortens and ensuring a bet to nothing.

Blackburn's hopes of European football next season were all but extinguished when they went down to Liverpool last Sunday and they will find it very difficult to raise their game for the visit of Man Utd, who almost have the title in their grasp. Go for a 2-0 Utd victory.

Fulham grabbed a lifeline when beating Reading last week and will battle Liverpool all the way at Craven Cottage. The Reds may rest a few of their top players with fourth place almost secured now and the Champions League semi-final on the horizon. The draw could be a value bet with 1-1 the suggested correct score.

Bolton gave themselves renewed hope when getting the better of West Ham last week and the Trotters will go to Middlesboro in determined mood. Boro aren't technically safe and they can't afford to take this easy so another 1-1 draw looks possible here. Neither side score many so lay over 2.5 goals.

Mid-table West Ham are using these closing games to give some of their promising youngsters experience. Against most sides, the Hammers would be worth opposing in these circumstances, but dead and buried Derby aren't most sides. Go for the home win with 2-0 and 3-0 correct score bets.

Wigan took a big step closer to safely with their extra time equaliser against Chelsea on Monday night and Steve Bruce's team can go further to prolonging their stay in the top flight by beating Tottenham, who have little incentive left this season, on Saturday.

Sunday's clash between Aston Villa and Birmingham will not be for the faint-hearted. The Blues are desperate for points and they will be a very different proposition to the woeful Derby, who Villa thumped 6-0 last week. Birmingham are capable of edging this one and its worth backing Zarate to continue his scoring sequence.

Man City, who found some form last week when beating Sunderland, entertain Portsmouth on Sunday. Pompey have an excellent away record and are chasing Everton hard for fifth spot but they have been a little goal-shy lately and a draw, either 0-0 or 1-1 is suggested. Lay over 2.5 goals as well.

Newcastle have turned the corner and the Magpies can win the north east derby against Sunderland. The Black Cats showed they are still vulnerable to a side with a bit class when losing to Man City last week.

Cricket Tips

Cricket lovely cricket

The new county cricket season is about to get underway and it’s time to have a bet in each division to help keep us interested during the months ahead.

Surrey are the tip at a general 7-1 in Division One. The Oval is such a good batting track that Surrey can hardly fail to score plenty of runs and their bowling line up is strong with Aussie Matt Nicholson and West Indian Pedro Collins leading the attack and it could get a lot stronger if teenager Chris Jordan fulfils his immense promise.

In Division Two Northamptonshire look good value at 12-1. Northants have some powerful overseas players in their side and they should be very competitive.

Charlton for promotion push

Football

The football season is fast approaching its a climax and we are in an excellent position with our long term bets on Everton for the Premier League without the big 4, Portsmouth to win the FA Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo to be top goalscorer.

The Championship has been incredibily volatile this season and the lead has changed hands with dizzying regularity. Even now there are at least 14 teams still in with chances of promotion to the Premier League.

At the time of writing Charlton can be backed at 9-1 to be promoted and those odds are worth taking. Charlton could easily make the payoffs and in Alan Pardew they have a manager who knows exactly what it takes to guide a side through that minefield.

In the Premier League Birmingham can go a long way to securing another term in the top flight by beating Everton at St Andrews. The Blues have a good home record and their visitors are showing the signs of a long hard season.

Bolton's fragile grip on survival is likely to become even more precarious when they entertain mid-table West Ham who are blooding some exciting youngsters at present.

Portsmouth are enjoying an excellent season and a month ago they would have been confidently expected to beat a Newcastle team in free fall but Kevin Keegan has turned the Magpies around and they go to Fratton Park on a four-timer. However, Pompey are the toughest opponents Newcastle have met since hitting winning form and this match could end in a draw.

Roy Hodgson admitted his Fulham side were doomed last week after they were thumped 3-1 at home by Sunderland and the Cottagers will probably just be going through the motions at Reading on Saturday. The home team can go a long way to guaranteeing their own Premiership status by winning 2-0 or 3-0.

Sunderland have hit some form lately and the Black Cats can send a drifting Man City team away from the Stadium Of Light empty handed.

Spurs have been hard to predict since their Carling Cup victory and with very little but pride left to play for they could easily be held to a draw by Middlesboro, who played well against Man Utd last week but aren't technically safe yet. 1-1 is suggested for a correct score bet.

There is plenty at stake in Sunday's clash between Liverpool and Blackburn at Anfield. The home side will be warm favourites but Mark Hughes' well organsided Rovers are just the type of outfit that could frustrate the Reds and a draw looks the value option.

Man Utd v Arsenal promises to be a cracker. Arsenal have nothing to lose by attacking and, with Utd's defence weakend by injuries, the Gunners could easily get a couple of goals but Sir Alex Ferguson's side have the inspired Rooney and Ronaldo and they will be desperately hard to stop scoring as well. A 2-2 draw is the suggestion and this is a game to lay under 2.5 goals.

Chelsea should eventually overcome Wigan at Stamford Bridge on Monday night with 1-0 and 2-0 the most likley score lines.

Smart Tommy

Greyhound racing

The semi-finals of the Greyhound Grand National are held at Wimbledon on Friday night. The final itself is on Tuesday April 15th and is live on Sky TV. The make up of the semis gives Tommy Bahama, Comans Joe and Kildare Lark every chance of winning their respective races and all three should be backed on Friday. The first named is also worth an ante post dabble.

Comans Joe and Kildare Lark head the ante-post betting at around 5-2 but Tommy Bahama is generally avaialable at 25-1 and is as big as 33-1 in a place. The bookmakers are offering a quarter the odds the first 3 in the final and we'll be sitting pretty come Tuesday if we back Tommy each-way and he gets through on Friday.

Up for the Cup

Football

Anyone who took the advice in these notes before the quarter finals to back Portsmouth at 16-1 to win the FA Cup is in the happy position of being able to save their stake and lock in a profit now that Harry Redknapp's side are odds-on favourites.

Pompey face West Brom in the first of this weekend's semi-finals in the 12.15 kick-off at Wembley on Saturday.

The Baggies are the best team in the Championship and their 78 goals for total is a whopping 15 more than their nearest rival.

There should be goals in this match and the 7-1 about Portsmouth winning 2-1, the 16-1 about a 2-2 draw and the 25-1 available about Portsmouth winning 3-2 after 90 minutes all make some appeal as does laying under 2.5 goals.

Cardiff are 9 points ahead of Barnsley with a game in hand in the Championship and Dave Jones' side are fancied to eventually emerge victorious from Sunday's semi-final but this looks the sort of game that may well need extra time and even penalties to decide.

0-0 (11-2) and 1-1 (17-2) are the correct score suggestions, while laying over 2.5 goals is another potentially profitable way to get involved in the 90 minute markets. Cardiff are 11-1 to win in extra time and the same price to go through on penalties.

In the Premier League, Arsenal and Liverpool meet in the middle leg of their trio of encounters. The Gunners did very well to come from 2-0 down to beat Bolton 3-2 after having a man sent off last week and are unbeaten at home in the league this season but they are not playing as well as they were earlier this term and Liverpool, who have produced some of their best form lately, could edge this one.

Aston Villa have been disappointing lately but they should still have too much with home advantage against Bolton, who are beginning to look doomed, and who's confidence will be rock-bottom following surrendering that 2-0 lead to Arsenal.

Blackburn are still fighting for European football and they should see off a Tottenham team that appears to think they have done enough for the season if last Sunday's tame 4-1 home loss to Newcastle is anything to go by.

Sunderland are on a high after winning their last two and will fancy their chances against Fulham. However, the home team are in the last chance saloon as far as their Premiership status is concerned and they will scrap for everything and could just give themselves a glimmer of hope by clinching all 3 points. Its unlikely to be a high scoring match and backing the correct score 1-0 is suggested along with laying over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle were flattered by their 4-1 victory at Tottenham last Sunday but their confidence will be high when they entertain Reading. However, the visitors are not safe yet and Steve Coppell's team will not be the soft touches Spurs were and the Royals could sneak a draw.

Wigan and Birmingham sit nervously just above the drop zone. One thing for sure is that this will not be an open and entertaining game. Go for the draw 0-0 (8-1) and 1-1 (11-2) and lay over 2.5 goals.

Middlesboro usually give the big clubs tough matches and Man Utd will not find it easy on Sunday at the Riverside. With Europe on their minds, Sir Alex Ferguson's team could be vulnerable and the value lies in backing the home team at 15-2.

Chelsea were lucky to beat Middlesboro last week and will need to play much better at Man City to keep their slim title hopes alive. That incentive should be enough for Avram Grant's side to come out on top against City who are steadily drifting down the league after such a bright start to the season.

Everton have key injuries and several of their fit players are out of form but they should still be able to beat relegated Derby at Goodison.

Spear a winner

Greyhound racing

This year's Greyhound Derby is fast approaching and it looks like being one of the most exciting for a long time. Ballymac Under and Barnfield On Air head the ante-post betting and both these top class hounds can be backed at 10-1.

However, I am going to suggest a more speculative each-way ante-post punt on Spears Tarquynn who showed that he has the talent to mount a serious Derby challenge when landing the Pall Mall at Oxford last week.

Spears Tarquynn is widely available at 66-1 and you may well be able to beat even those juicy odds if you look around.

Football Tips

  • Saturday - West Bom v Portsmouth back 1-2, 2-2 and 2-3 correct scores and lay under 2.5 goals. Arsenal v Liverpool away win. Aston Villa v Bolton home win. Blackburn v Tottenham home win. Fulham v Sunderland home win, back 1-0 correct score and lay over 2.5 goals. Newcastle v Reading draw. Wigan v Birmingham draw, back 0-0 and 1-1 correct scores and lay over 2.5.

  • Sunday - Cardiff v Barnsley back 0-0 and 1-1 correct scores, lay over 2.5 goals and back Cardiff to win in extra time and on penalties. Middlesboro v Man Utd home win. Man City v Chelsea away win. Everton v Derby home win.

Hammers to nail Sunderland

Football

West Ham have recovered well from a run of heavy defeats and were unlucky not to take all 3 points against Everton last weekend. The Hammers have some exciting young talent coming through and, with centre forward Dean Ashton looking like his old self, they can give Sunderland, who enjoyed a surprise win last week at Aston Villa, a reality check when they travel to the North East on Saturday.

Birmingham are fighting for their Premier League lives. Losing arguably their most creative player, James McFadden, to injury is a big blow but A
