Part of the reason that online betting has become so popular is the offering of free bets, not available in the traditional bookmakers. A majority of the online bookmakers offer free bets for new customers in a bid to entice new business.

These offers are constantly changing, and more so during the bigger sporting events. For example during the Cheltenham Festival, some of the big name bookmakers actually doubled their free bet offers.

There are two main types of free bets on offer from the bookmakers, stake returned free bets, and stake not returned free bets. The stake returned versions are much better, enabling you to guarantee a profit if you lay your bets at a betting exchange such as Betfair. Stake not returned bets only give you back the winnings rather than your original stake on top of the winnings. For example, if a bookmaker was offering a stake returned free bet, and you choose to bet £20 at odds of evens, you would receive £40 back. A stake not returned bet would only return the £20 in winnings. There are very few of the stake returned bets around, simply because they are quite costly for the bookmakers.
